The Prime Minister’s Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana is proving to be a cost-effective and highly beneficial initiative for electricity consumers, while also contributing to environmental sustainability through the promotion of renewable energy. The growing popularity of the scheme in Rajnandgaon district reflects increasing public awareness and acceptance of solar energy as a reliable source of power.
Mr. Rupchand Bhimanani, a representative of the Energy Department, has installed a 3-kW rooftop solar unit at his residence located on Station Road in the Old Civil Lines area of Rajnandgaon. Sharing his experience, he described the scheme launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi as a visionary and public-centric initiative.
He stated that the scheme has transformed consumers into power producers, enabling households not only to meet their own electricity needs but also to contribute surplus energy to the power grid. According to Mr. Bhimanani, green energy is pollution-free and plays a crucial role in protecting the environment while meeting future energy demands.
Mr. Bhimanani revealed that before the installation of the solar plant, his monthly electricity bill was approximately ₹10,000. Following the installation, the bill has been reduced to around ₹6,000, providing substantial financial relief. He also received a subsidy of ₹1.08 lakh under the Prime Minister’s Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, significantly reducing the overall cost of the project.
He further noted that after approximately two years, the solar plant would effectively become cost-free due to the savings generated through reduced electricity expenses. Encouraging wider participation, he urged citizens to take maximum advantage of the scheme and install rooftop solar plants at their homes.

Expressing gratitude, Mr. Bhimanani thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai for implementing a scheme that benefits both consumers and the environment.
Officials highlighted that the Prime Minister’s Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana has emerged as an effective measure for reducing electricity expenses and promoting energy conservation. Solar plants installed under the scheme are connected to the electricity grid through net metering, allowing surplus electricity generated by consumers to be supplied back to the grid.
As a result, consumers can significantly reduce or even eliminate their electricity bills while earning additional income from excess power generation. The cost of rooftop solar installations and the subsidy amount vary depending on the capacity of the plant, and consumers are free to select the brand of their choice.
Under the scheme, a subsidy of ₹45,000 per plant is available for a 1-kW solar installation, comprising ₹30,000 from the Central Government and ₹15,000 from the State Government. For a 2-kW solar plant, consumers are eligible for a total subsidy of ₹90,000, including ₹60,000 from the Centre and ₹30,000 from the State Government. Similarly, a 3-kW solar plant qualifies for a total subsidy of ₹1.08 lakh, consisting of ₹78,000 from the Central Government and ₹30,000 from the State Government.
To avail themselves of the benefits under the Prime Minister’s Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, applicants must register on the official portal and obtain a login ID. After selecting an approved vendor available on the portal, consumers can complete the application process with assistance from electricity department personnel. Following the execution of the required agreement, the vendor installs the rooftop solar plant, and the DISCOM sets up a net meter. After verification of the installed system, the subsidy amount is released online by the government.
