President Murmu Administers Oath in Dignified Ceremony at Rashtrapati Bhavan

Justice Surya Kant was sworn in as the 52nd Chief Justice of India this morning in a solemn ceremony held at the Ashok Hall of Rashtrapati Bhavan. President Droupadi Murmu administered the oath of office and secrecy to Justice Kant, who succeeds Chief Justice D.Y. Chandrachud upon his retirement on November 10.The ceremony was attended by Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal, retiring Chief Justice D.Y. Chandrachud, judges of the Supreme Court, senior advocates, and other dignitaries.

Born on February 10, 1962, Justice Surya Kant brings to the highest judicial office a distinguished career spanning over three decades. Enrolled as an advocate in 1984, he practised primarily at the Punjab and Haryana High Court before being elevated as a judge of that High Court in 2007. He later served as Chief Justice of the Himachal Pradesh High Court before his appointment to the Supreme Court in 2019.Known for his progressive judgments on environmental protection, judicial transparency, and human rights, Justice Kant has authored several landmark verdicts during his tenure at the apex court. His elevation follows the well-established convention of seniority.

As he assumes office at a time when the judiciary faces increasing caseloads and evolving legal challenges, Justice Surya Kant’s tenure is expected to focus on judicial reforms, faster disposal of cases, and strengthening public trust in the institution.

Speaking briefly after the ceremony, the new Chief Justice expressed gratitude to the President and paid rich tributes to his predecessor. “I am deeply conscious of the responsibility placed upon me. With humility and determination, I will strive to uphold the majesty of the Constitution and the independence of the judiciary,” he said.The legal fraternity and citizens across the country have extended warm wishes to Chief Justice Surya Kant for a successful and impactful tenure ahead.
