The National Horticulture Mission is playing an important role in connecting farmers with modern agricultural technologies and making farming more advanced and beneficial. Taking advantage of the scheme, Amarnath Sahu, a farmer from Devada village in Rajnandgaon development block, has given a new direction to his agricultural activities through crop diversification and modern horticultural practices.
Traditionally engaged in paddy cultivation, Sahu has now adopted the cultivation of various vegetables, leafy greens, flowers and fruits. With support under the National Horticulture Mission, he has also benefited from the mulching technique, which helps improve crop management and conserve soil moisture.
Mulching Technology Supports Better Crop Management
Under the National Horticulture Mission, Sahu received assistance for adopting mulching technology. The technique helps retain moisture in the soil, reduces weed growth and supports better crop care. It also facilitates more efficient use of irrigation water and improves overall crop management.
The mission encourages farmers to move beyond traditional farming practices and adopt horticultural crops by providing support and promoting modern agricultural techniques.

Diverse Crops Cultivated Across 10 Acres
Amarnath Sahu said he owns a total of 10 acres of agricultural land. Earlier, he primarily cultivated paddy, but after recognising the opportunities in horticulture, he decided to diversify his farming activities.
At present, he cultivates various vegetables and flowers on approximately 7.50 acres, while bananas are grown on the remaining 2.50 acres.
His fields produce a wide range of crops, including brinjal, chilli, cauliflower, bitter gourd, snake gourd, okra, cowpea, beans, cucumber, pumpkin, bottle gourd, radish and marigold, along with different leafy vegetables.
Local Market Provides an Avenue for Sale
Cultivating multiple crops gives Sahu opportunities to plan production according to seasonal conditions and market demand. Along with producing different horticultural crops, he also sells his produce in the local market.
His farming journey demonstrates how crop diversification and the adoption of modern techniques can help farmers explore alternatives to traditional cultivation.
Farmer Expresses Gratitude for Government Support
Amarnath Sahu thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai for the technical guidance and benefits received under the National Horticulture Mission.
By adopting modern horticultural practices and diversifying crops, Sahu has presented an example of agricultural innovation with support from a government scheme.
