The right to dissent is an essential part of democracy, but attempts to weaken constitutional institutions, undermine their dignity and create an atmosphere of anarchy in the country will not be accepted by Indian society. This was the central message that emerged during an intellectual discussion organised at Sindhu Bhawan, Rajnandgaon, under the Bharatiya Janata Party’s ‘Save Democracy, Remove Anarchy’ campaign.
The programme brought together distinguished citizens from different fields, including advocates, journalists, business representatives and social organisations. Former Cabinet Minister and senior BJP leader Premprakash Pandey presided over the event. Senior BJP leader, National Council member and former Cabinet Minister-rank office-holder Khubchand Parakh, along with other speakers, shared their views on democracy, the dignity of constitutional institutions and the current political situation.
Right to Dissent Must Be Exercised Within Democratic Framework
During the discussion, speakers said that the greatest strength of democracy lies in its institutions, constitutional framework and the public’s trust in them. Political parties have every right to express their views, oppose the government and raise dissenting voices, but such activities must remain within the boundaries of the democratic system.
They said that turning protests into disorder, targeting constitutional institutions and attempting to create public distrust in them are not in the national interest.
Referring to the current political environment, speakers observed that any attempt to weaken the credibility of institutions under the cover of democratic rights and freedom of expression requires serious consideration by aware citizens.
The discussion aimed to place these issues before informed members of society and highlight their responsibility towards protecting democratic values.
Third Stanza of Vande Mataram Creates a Special Patriotic Experience
One of the most notable moments of the programme came during the collective singing of the national song Vande Mataram. The third stanza, in particular, created a deeply emotional and patriotic atmosphere among those present.
The stanza included the lines:
त्वं हि दुर्गा दशप्रहरणधारिणी।
कमला कमलदलविहारिणी॥
वाणी विद्यादायिनी, नमामि त्वाम्।
नमामि कमलाम्, अमलाम्, अतुलाम्,
सुजलाम्, सुफलाम्, मातरम्॥
The verses portray the motherland through the symbols of Goddess Durga, representing strength; Goddess Lakshmi, representing prosperity; and Goddess Saraswati, representing knowledge.
