Women across Chhattisgarh and several other regions of the country are setting remarkable examples of empowerment through the management of water resources, fisheries and tourism-related activities. By leveraging the strength of self-help groups, rural women are becoming increasingly self-reliant and financially independent.

One such inspiring success story has emerged from the picturesque Pilkha Reservoir, located near the popular tourist destination of Pahadgaon in Surajpur district. The reservoir, known for its natural beauty, has now become a shining example of women-led entrepreneurship, thanks to the efforts of the Muskaan Women Self-Help Group.

Collective Effort Creates New Employment Opportunities

Under the leadership of Group President Mrs. Sunita Singh and Secretary Mrs. Yashoda Das, the 10-member self-help group identified tourism as an opportunity for sustainable income generation.

The group introduced a boating facility for visitors arriving at the reservoir, offering tourists an enjoyable experience while creating a reliable source of livelihood for local women. A ticket price of ₹50 per person has been fixed for the boating service, making the activity accessible to tourists while ensuring steady revenue generation.

Turning Challenges into Opportunities

The initiative was not without challenges. During the initial phase, the women faced several obstacles, including limited resources, lack of technical knowledge and operational difficulties.

However, through determination, teamwork and perseverance, the members transformed these challenges into opportunities. Instead of depending on external assistance, the women took responsibility for managing boating operations, ensuring tourist safety and maintaining the surrounding facilities.

Their commitment and collective effort have enabled the venture to grow successfully and gain recognition as a community-driven tourism initiative.

Income Growth Strengthens Financial Independence

The boating project has generated a net income of ₹74,000 for the group so far, significantly improving the economic condition of its members.

The earnings have not only strengthened household finances but have also enhanced the confidence and decision-making abilities of the women involved. Today, the members are contributing actively to their families’ livelihoods while inspiring other women in rural communities to pursue entrepreneurship and self-employment opportunities.

A Model of Rural Women Entrepreneurship

The success of the Muskaan Women Self-Help Group demonstrates that when rural women are provided with the right opportunities, support systems and platforms, they can excel in any field.
