Congress Stages Protest at IG Office

The Congress party on Tuesday gheraoed the office of the Inspector General (IG) of Police over the alleged mistreatment of a 14-year-old girl in the Somni police station area and the reported procurement of allegedly fake pregnancy test kits by the health department.

Congress workers raised slogans and submitted a memorandum demanding immediate action against those responsible.

Details of the Incident

According to information presented by Congress leaders, a 14-year-old girl from the Somni area was taken to a government hospital on May 24 after complaining of stomach pain. Following an initial medical examination in which a pregnancy test reportedly returned positive, police were informed.

Congress leaders alleged that the girl and her family were subsequently subjected to mistreatment at the police station. According to the victim’s statement cited by the party, police personnel in civil dress allegedly behaved inappropriately and subjected her to mental harassment.

The controversy intensified after subsequent medical examinations, including sonography and other tests, reportedly found no evidence of pregnancy, raising questions over the earlier test results.

Police Action and Ongoing Inquiry

Taking cognizance of the seriousness of the matter, Superintendent of Police Ankita Sharma suspended the Station House Officer (TI) and the concerned constable.

Separate inquiry committees have reportedly been constituted at both the police department and administrative levels to investigate the matter.

Congress Demands Strict Action

Congress leaders who reached the IG office demanded that an FIR be registered under the Juvenile Justice (JJ) Act against the police personnel accused of mistreating the minor girl.

The party also demanded the immediate registration of an FIR against the supplier allegedly responsible for providing fake pregnancy test kits to the health department.

Warning of Protest at Raman Singh’s Office

Congress leaders alleged that the supplier of the pregnancy test kits has links to the family of a BJP leader and claimed that attempts were being made to suppress the matter. These allegations have been made by Congress leaders and have not been independently verified.

The party warned that if prompt action is not taken on these issues, it will launch a protest and gherao the local office of Assembly Speaker Dr. Raman Singh.

Local Congress workers stated that if action is delayed further, senior Congress leaders from across the state may also join the agitation in the coming days.

Large Participation in Demonstration

Among those participating in the protest were Jitu Mudaliyar, Mehul Maru, former Mayor Hema Deshmukh, Santosh Pille, Shrikishan Khandelwal, Amin Hudda, Ashok Panjwani, along with a large number of Congress office-bearers and party workers.

Police Assure Fair Investigation

Superintendent of Police Ankita Sharma had earlier assured that all aspects of the case are being examined through a fair and impartial investigation. She stated that strict action would be taken against any individuals found responsible once the inquiry reports are submitted.

The case has raised serious questions regarding police sensitivity in handling matters involving minors as well as the verification mechanisms related to medical testing supplies within the health department.

Investigations are currently underway, and further action is expected to depend on the findings of the inquiry reports.
