Under Census 2027 being conducted by the Government of India, the first phase titled House Listing and Housing Census will be carried out in the state of Chhattisgarh from May 1 to May 30, 2026, covering a period of 30 days.
This phase constitutes a crucial component of the census process, during which detailed information will be collected regarding every residential and non-residential building, housing conditions, usage patterns, and availability of essential amenities.
Self-Enumeration Option Introduced Under Digital India
As part of the Digital India initiative, a self-enumeration facility has been introduced this time for the convenience of citizens. Interested residents may submit information related to their family and housing details through the designated online portal between April 16 and April 30, 2026.
Families completing self-enumeration will receive a Self-Enumeration ID, which must be safely preserved and shared with the enumerator during verification visits. After confirming the submitted information, the enumerator will finalize and submit the data.
Information to be Collected During the Survey
Under this phase, data will be collected on several key aspects, including:
- Number, condition, and type of buildings and houses
- Usage of property (residential, commercial, or other purposes)
- Nature of construction (kutcha, pucca, or semi-pucca)
- Number of families residing and their housing details
- Availability of basic amenities such as drinking water, toilet facilities, electricity connections, cooking fuel or gas usage
- Internet and communication facilities
The collected data will play a vital role in shaping socio-economic schemes, urban and rural development initiatives, housing programs, water and sanitation projects, and infrastructure planning across the country.

Door-to-Door Enumeration and Citizen Cooperation
Enumerators will visit every household during the scheduled period to collect information. All enumerators will carry authorized identity cards, which citizens may verify before sharing information.
Citizens are requested to provide accurate and complete details. Families who have completed self-enumeration must share their Self-Enumeration ID with the visiting enumerator.
Confidentiality and Responsible Participation
All information collected during the census will remain strictly confidential. The data will be used solely for statistical analysis and policy formulation purposes, and individual information will not be made public.
Citizens are encouraged to actively cooperate in this national exercise, take advantage of the self-enumeration facility within the prescribed timeline, and share information only with authorized census personnel. Providing accurate and truthful information is considered the responsibility of every citizen.
Monitoring and Grievance Redressal Mechanism
Control rooms will be established at district, state, and national levels to monitor the census process. Senior officials will conduct regular inspections, and a helpline and online grievance redressal system will be available to address public concerns.
The Director of the Directorate of Census Operations, Chhattisgarh, has appealed to all citizens to actively participate in this important national task. Accurate and complete data provided by citizens will help make development schemes more effective.
Census Data: Foundation of Future Planning
Census data forms the backbone of the country’s economic, social, and infrastructure development planning. The information gathered assists the government in accurate policy formulation, resource allocation, and long-term planning.
As the largest administrative exercise in the country, the census enables an assessment of population distribution, housing conditions, and availability of basic amenities, ensuring that future policies become more effective, inclusive, and development-oriented.
