Innovative groundwater recharge and sustainable water management models in the district appreciated as a national example

Union Minister of State for Jal Shakti Dr. Raj Bhushan Choudhary reviewed ongoing water conservation and groundwater recharge works during his visit to Barga village in Rajnandgaon development block. The Minister inspected key structures including percolation tanks, injection wells, borewell-cum-recharge systems, and soft sand filter recharge structures implemented as part of sustainable water management efforts in the district.
During the visit, the Minister appreciated the district administration’s innovative initiatives aimed at water conservation, groundwater level improvement, and long-term water sustainability. He remarked that the water management practices being adopted in the district could serve as a model for the entire country.
Focus on Sustainable Agriculture and Crop Diversification
Interacting with villagers and farmers, Dr. Choudhary encouraged the adoption of crop diversification and water-efficient farming practices. He urged farmers to shift gradually from water-intensive paddy cultivation to pulses and oilseed crops that require less water.
He informed farmers that under the government’s PM-AASHA scheme, procurement of pulses and oilseeds at Minimum Support Price is being carried out, helping farmers secure better income while conserving water resources.
Collector Briefs Minister on Technical Innovations
District Collector Jitendra Yadav presented a detailed overview of the district’s groundwater management strategy. He explained the technical aspects of water recharge structures, including percolation tanks, recharge shafts, pond conservation models, and groundwater restoration systems developed at comparatively low cost with high efficiency.

According to the Collector, villages where recharge structures have been installed have witnessed significant improvement in groundwater availability. In several locations, borewell water capacity has nearly doubled, ensuring better water access for rural communities.
He further stated that the recharge shaft technology allows rainwater to directly reach underground aquifers, helping revive long-defunct borewells. Separate infrastructure is also being developed for rainwater harvesting and greywater treatment to promote sustainable water reuse.
Strengthening Water Security in Rural Areas
The initiative has emerged as a key step toward strengthening water security in rural regions facing groundwater depletion. Improved water availability is not only benefiting agriculture but also ensuring reliable drinking water supply for villages.
The Minister appreciated the community participation and administrative coordination involved in implementing the project and emphasized the need to replicate such successful models across other districts.
