In a major welfare initiative aimed at strengthening rural livelihoods, the Chhattisgarh government will transfer nearly ₹500 crore to around 5 lakh landless agricultural labour families under the Deendayal Upadhyay Landless Agricultural Labour Welfare Scheme. Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai is scheduled to release the funds on March 25 from Balodabazar.

The scheme is one of the flagship initiatives of the state government, designed to provide financial support and economic security to landless agricultural workers in rural areas. Officials said that over 4.95 lakh eligible families will benefit from the scheme, with a total provision of ₹495.96 crore allocated for direct benefit transfer.

Under the scheme, each beneficiary family receives an annual financial assistance of ₹10,000 directly into their bank accounts. The move is aimed at enhancing the income of landless labourers and ensuring their inclusion in the mainstream development process.

According to official data, Raipur district has the highest number of beneficiaries, with 53,338 landless agricultural labourers set to receive assistance. In contrast, Bijapur district has the lowest number of beneficiaries at 1,542. Other districts such as Bilaspur (39,401), Mahasamund (37,011), Korea (1,549), and Narayanpur (1,805) will also see significant coverage under the scheme.

The state government has emphasized that the initiative reflects its commitment to the principle of “Antyodaya,” ensuring that the last person in the queue receives priority in governance and welfare delivery.

In the 2026–27 budget, the government has further strengthened the scheme by increasing its allocation to ₹600 crore, signaling its long-term commitment to improving the socio-economic conditions of landless labour families.

The scheme also includes a wide range of traditionally landless communities such as minor forest produce collectors, shepherds, carpenters, blacksmiths, cobblers, barbers, and washermen. Additionally, in Scheduled Areas, tribal families engaged in traditional roles like priests, Baiga, Guniya, and Manjhi have been included. Notably, 22,028 Baiga and Guniya families are among the beneficiaries, recognizing their role in preserving cultural heritage.

Officials said that the annual assistance—recently increased from ₹7,000 to ₹10,000—will help beneficiaries meet essential needs such as education, healthcare, and daily expenses without resorting to debt.

The government believes that empowering landless labourers through direct financial support will contribute to building a more secure, dignified, and self-reliant rural economy in Chhattisgarh.
