Adopting innovation and diversification in agriculture has proven to be a game-changer for a young farmer from Chhattisgarh’s Jashpur district. Ankit Lakda of Ratba village has transformed his traditional farming practices into a sustainable and multi-income model by integrating fish farming with poultry rearing, setting an inspiring example for rural entrepreneurs.

Traditionally dependent on paddy cultivation during the monsoon season, Lakda decided to explore new opportunities to make farming more profitable throughout the year. With guidance from the fisheries department, he constructed ponds on his farmland, enabling him to undertake farming activities even during the summer months. He also planted mango orchards and utilized pond water for irrigation, thereby expanding into horticulture.

Taking his efforts further, Lakda introduced an integrated fish–poultry farming system by constructing sheds over two ponds. With a capacity of 1,000 to 1,200 birds, the setup allows poultry waste to be directly used as feed for fish, significantly reducing operational costs while enhancing productivity. This model ensures dual income streams with minimal additional investment.

In addition, Lakda planted mango and litchi trees along the pond embankments, which not only provide extra income but also help in soil conservation by preventing erosion. His approach reflects a well-planned combination of agriculture, horticulture, and allied activities.

Lakda also benefited from government support under the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana, receiving financial assistance of ₹8 lakh along with essential materials such as pond liners, nets, motors, and feed. This support played a key role in establishing his integrated farming infrastructure.

Other farmers in the region are also adopting this model, citing its economic and environmental benefits. Fish farmer Nandkishore Patel shared that while the initial investment is slightly higher, the system ensures stable monthly income once established. He noted that integrating poultry with fish farming has significantly improved his earnings.

Experts believe that such integrated models can enhance farmers’ income, promote sustainability, and reduce risks associated with single-crop dependency. Lakda’s success story highlights how innovative thinking and effective utilization of government schemes can transform agriculture into a profitable and resilient venture.

His journey stands as a testament to the potential of modern farming techniques and serves as an inspiration for farmers across the country to adopt diversified and sustainable practices.
