Integrated pond-based poultry system boosts income and sustainability in Chhattisgarh’s Jashpur district

In a remarkable example of innovation in agriculture, a young farmer from Chhattisgarh’s Jashpur district has successfully transformed traditional farming into a profitable, multi-dimensional enterprise. Ankit Lakda, a resident of Ratba village, has adopted an integrated fish-cum-poultry farming model that is not only enhancing his income but also setting a benchmark for sustainable rural livelihoods.
With the growing need to diversify agricultural practices, Lakda moved beyond seasonal paddy cultivation and embraced modern techniques and allied activities. Initially dependent on monsoon-based farming, he sought guidance from the fisheries department and constructed ponds on his farmland. This enabled him to continue agricultural activities even during the summer months, including horticulture using pond water.
Taking innovation a step further, Lakda built sheds over two of his ponds to integrate poultry farming with fish rearing. The system, which accommodates around 1,000 to 1,200 birds, allows poultry waste to serve as feed for fish, significantly reducing input costs while increasing productivity. This integrated model ensures dual income from both poultry and fisheries.

In addition to fish and poultry farming, Lakda has planted mango and litchi trees along the pond embankments. These not only provide additional income but also help in soil conservation by preventing erosion. The use of pond water for irrigation further strengthens the sustainability of his farming system.
Lakda also benefited from government support under the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana, receiving a subsidy of ₹8 lakh along with essential resources such as pond liners, nets, motors, and fish feed. This assistance played a crucial role in establishing the infrastructure required for his integrated farming model.
Farmers adopting this system highlight its economic and environmental advantages. Local fish farmer Nandkishore Patel shared that while the initial investment may be moderate, the model ensures steady monthly income once established. “Earlier, I was only involved in fish farming, but integrating poultry has significantly improved my earnings,” he said.
Experts believe that such models can revolutionize rural agriculture by promoting self-reliance and reducing dependency on single-crop systems. Lakda’s success story demonstrates how innovative thinking and effective use of government schemes can turn farming into a resilient and profitable venture.
His journey stands as an inspiration for farmers across the region, encouraging them to adopt diversified and sustainable agricultural practices for better income and long-term growth.
