In a powerful display of resilience and reverence, President Droupadi Murmu, the Supreme Commander of the Indian Armed Forces, stood resolute under heavy rainfall to pay homage to the nation’s fallen heroes at the National War Memorial on August 15, 2025. The poignant moment, marked by her unwavering commitment despite the downpour, has left the nation in awe and inspired widespread admiration.

Accompanied by Chief of Defence Staff Anil Chauhan, Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi, Navy Chief Admiral Dinesh Tripathi, and Air Chief Marshal Amar Preet Singh, President Murmu led a solemn wreath-laying ceremony to honor the bravehearts who made the ultimate sacrifice for India. The presence of two women Air Force officers carrying the wreath added a significant touch to the ceremony, symbolizing the growing role of women in the armed forces.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and Union Minister of State for Defence Sanjay Seth also joined the President, standing alongside her in the rain without umbrellas, a gesture that underscored their shared commitment to honoring the nation’s martyrs. The ceremony, held on the occasion of India’s 79th Independence Day, was a fitting tribute to those who laid down their lives in conflicts such as the Kargil War, the 1961 Goa operation, and other key military engagements.

President Murmu’s stoic presence, undeterred by the relentless rain, resonated deeply with citizens, with many describing the moment as “goosebumps-inducing” and a powerful symbol of respect for India’s heroes. The National War Memorial, spread over 40 acres and unveiled in 2019 by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, stands as a testament to the sacrifices made by soldiers in independent India.
