Collector Visits Village to Observe Innovative Agricultural Practices and Water Conservation Efforts

Village Ghupsal of Chhuria development block has presented an inspiring example in the fields of water conservation and agriculture. Farmers here collectively decided to replace traditional water-intensive paddy cultivation during the Rabi season with crops requiring less water. The initiative has yielded positive results, leading to an increase in the village’s groundwater level and noticeable improvement in water availability.
Collective Decision by Farmers
The farmers adopted this change not under any government pressure but through awareness and collective thinking. More than 350 acres of agricultural land were cultivated with crops such as maize, pulses, and oilseeds that require comparatively less water.
Awareness campaigns conducted at the Panchayat level played a crucial role in encouraging this transition. Under the leadership of District Panchayat Chief Executive Officer Suruchi Singh, extensive awareness initiatives on water conservation and crop diversification were carried out, visibly influencing the mindset of villagers. Farmers took the initiative to adopt crop diversification, a bold step that has indicated both water savings and potential increases in productivity and income.
Collector Reviews the Innovation
Collector Jitendra Yadav visited village Ghupsal during his tour of Chhuria block to observe the farmers’ innovation firsthand. He inspected the fields, reviewed crop conditions, and interacted with farmers to understand their experiences.
Appreciating the initiative, the Collector stated that adopting low-water crops has become essential in the present scenario, as it helps conserve water resources, reduce cultivation costs, and increase farmers’ income.
Noticeable Improvement in Water Availability
Villagers shared that earlier the village used to face severe water shortages during the summer season. After the month of Phagun, ponds, hand pumps, and streams would dry up, creating serious challenges for drinking water and daily usage.
However, the situation has changed significantly this year. Even towards the end of April, ponds continue to hold adequate water, marking a major improvement compared to previous years.
Officials and Public Representatives Present
District Panchayat President Kiran Vaishnav, District Panchayat CEO Suruchi Singh, Chhuria CEO Hori Lal Sahu, Sarpanch Naresh Shukla, along with public representatives and a large number of villagers, were present during the visit.
A Model for the Entire District
The initiative undertaken by village Ghupsal is now emerging as a model for the entire district. By adopting similar practices, other regions may also find sustainable solutions to water scarcity and strengthen agricultural resilience.
