In a significant boost to the enduring strategic partnership between India and Russia, External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar met with his Russian counterpart, Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, in Moscow today. The discussions, held at the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs Reception House, covered a broad spectrum of bilateral cooperation and set the stage for deeper collaboration amid evolving global dynamics.

The two leaders delved into key areas of mutual interest, including trade and investment, energy security, mobility initiatives, agricultural partnerships, technological advancements, cultural exchanges, and people-to-people connections. “India-Russia ties have long been a factor of stability in international relations, and their growth and evolution are not only in the mutual interest of the two countries but also in the interest of the world,” Dr. Jaishankar remarked during the opening of the meeting, emphasizing the openness that has always characterized their interactions.

The agenda extended to an exchange of perspectives on regional, global, and multilateral issues, including the ongoing Ukraine conflict and broader geopolitical complexities. Both sides underscored the importance of continued dialogue to navigate these challenges effectively. Lavrov, in turn, reaffirmed Russia’s commitment to India as a top priority in Moscow’s foreign policy, highlighting the steadiness of their “Special and Privileged Strategic Partnership.

“A focal point of the talks was the review of preparations for the 23rd Annual India-Russia Summit, scheduled for December in New Delhi, where President Vladimir Putin is expected to visit. Several bilateral agreements, joint initiatives, and projects across defense, trade, and high-tech sectors are under active discussion, with concrete deliverables anticipated. This includes potential pacts on energy cooperation and mobility enhancements, which could further bolster economic ties between the two nations.

Dr. Jaishankar’s visit coincides with his participation in the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Heads of Government Council meeting on November 17-18, where he leads the Indian delegation. Notably, the minister is set to virtually inaugurate two new Indian consulates in Kazan (Tatarstan) and Ekaterinburg (Urals region), expanding India’s diplomatic footprint to facilitate trade, cultural, and technological exchanges in these vital Russian hubs.

This engagement builds on recent high-level interactions, such as the ministers’ sideline meeting at the 80th UN General Assembly in September and Russian Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Patrushev’s visit to India the same month. As India and Russia navigate a multipolar world, today’s discussions reaffirm their shared commitment to mutual growth, stability, and strategic autonomy, promising enhanced substance and texture to their decades-old alliance.
