In a significant diplomatic shift, India has announced the reopening of its embassy in Kabul after a four-year hiatus, marking an upgrade in relations with the Taliban-led government in Afghanistan. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar met with Afghan Acting Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi on the sidelines of a multilateral forum, where both sides reaffirmed India’s commitment to Afghanistan’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

This move comes as India pledges to provide essential medical equipment, including MRI and CT scan machines, vaccines, and cancer medicines, to support the Afghan healthcare system strained by ongoing challenges. The decision is seen as a pragmatic step to counterbalance regional influences and facilitate direct engagement on issues like counter-terrorism and economic cooperation.

However, it has sparked domestic debates on balancing humanitarian outreach with concerns over human rights, particularly after the Afghan minister’s press conference in Delhi excluded women journalists, reigniting discussions on gender policies. This development could pave the way for enhanced people-to-people contacts and trade, potentially stabilizing South Asian dynamics in the coming months.
