The last date for insuring Rabi crops under the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY) for the Rabi season 2025–26 is December 31, 2025, the Agriculture Department has announced. The scheme covers major Rabi crops including gram, wheat, mustard and linseed at a highly subsidised premium rate of just 1.5 per cent.

According to official data, during the Rabi season 2024–25, crops spread over 39,541 hectares were insured in the district. Due to crop damage caused by untimely rainfall and other adverse factors, insurance companies paid compensation amounting to ₹33 crore to 20,380 farmers. However, in the ongoing Rabi season 2025–26, only 15,627 hectares have been covered under the insurance scheme so far, raising concerns among officials.

The Agriculture Department stated that field officers are continuously visiting villages to motivate farmers to insure their crops. Cooperative societies are also encouraging farmers at paddy procurement centres to bring their Rabi crops under insurance coverage. Despite these efforts, banks are facing practical difficulties in insuring crops of farmers who have neither sold paddy nor updated their Kharif short-term crop loans.

Officials clarified that farmers who have not updated their loans can still avail crop insurance by registering themselves as non-loanee farmers through Lok Seva Kendras. Both loanee and non-loanee farmers are eligible to benefit from the scheme.

For the Rabi season, the premium rates fixed per hectare are ₹690 for irrigated wheat, ₹405 for non-irrigated wheat, ₹645 for gram, ₹375 for rai–mustard and ₹315 for linseed.

Deputy Director of Agriculture Tikam Singh Thakur has appealed to all farmers of the district to utilise the remaining days and get their crops insured through bank branches or Lok Seva Kendras. He emphasised that crop insurance provides crucial financial security against losses caused by natural disasters such as hailstorms, cyclones, cyclonic rains and unseasonal rainfall.
