Three Consecutive Losses Seal Tournament Exit; Australia and Pakistan Enter Semi-Finals

India’s campaign at the Hong Kong Sixes 2025 came to a disappointing end on Friday after suffering a 92-run defeat to Nepal, marking their third consecutive loss in the group stage and confirming their exit from the tournament. The shortened-overs exhibition event, known for its fast pace and high scoring, saw India struggle to adapt to the aggressive format and bowling-friendly conditions.

Nepal posted a commanding total, powered by explosive top-order hitting that pushed India on the back foot from the opening over. The Indian bowling attack failed to contain the run flow, conceding boundaries at ease in the tight six-a-side format. In response, India faltered early, losing two wickets in the first over and never recovering momentum. The innings ended far short of the target, sealing one of the biggest defeats of the tournament.

India had earlier suffered losses to Australia and Hong Kong, putting them in a must-win situation entering the Nepal clash. However, repeated batting collapses and lack of clarity in power play strategy left the side unable to compete effectively. The defeat also eliminates India from contention before they play their final bowl-off and exhibition fixture against Sri Lanka later tonight.

Meanwhile, Australia and Pakistan have stormed into the semi-finals, displaying superior adaptability in field placement, boundary striking, and precision death-over bowling — skills crucial in the six-a-side format, where matches are often decided within minutes.

Cricket analysts noted that India’s squad selection, which leaned heavily on young domestic players with limited exposure to extreme short-format variations, may have contributed to the outcome. Nepal, on the other hand, continues to rise as a force in associate cricket, strengthening its reputation with sharp fielding and fearless batting.

The Hong Kong Sixes — known for its festive crowd, modified boundaries, and rapid gameplay — has historically been a platform for emerging players. India’s early exit has now sparked discussions on strategic planning for future editions.
