Truck Trapped in Massive Sinkhole on Gurugram’s Southern Peripheral Road

Heavy Rainfall Triggers Road Collapse, Stranding Vehicle and Highlighting City’s Infrastructure Woes

Chaos ensued on Gurugram’s Southern Peripheral Road (SPR) last night when a massive sinkhole, caused by a sudden road cave-in, trapped a truck loaded with beer bottles. The incident, reported around late Wednesday evening, has left commuters and authorities grappling with yet another stark reminder of the city’s crumbling infrastructure, exacerbated by relentless monsoon rains.

According to eyewitnesses and the truck driver, the road appeared dry and stable moments before the collapse. “I was driving to the godown when the ground just gave way beneath me,” the driver told local media. “Two other vehicles, including another truck and a dumper, had crossed the same spot minutes earlier without issue. Then, out of nowhere, the road caved in, and my truck was stuck.” The vehicle remains lodged in the ditch, with recovery efforts hampered by ongoing rainfall and logistical challenges.

The cave-in, attributed to heavy rainfall that battered Delhi-NCR on Wednesday evening, has spotlighted Gurugram’s persistent drainage and infrastructure issues. The city recorded 133mm of rain in just 12 hours, including an intense 103mm in 90 minutes, leading to widespread waterlogging and traffic snarls across key areas like Sohna Road, Golf Course Road, and the Jaipur Expressway. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has placed Gurugram on an Orange Alert, warning of more showers and potential disruptions.

Residents and commuters have taken to social media to express their frustration, with many tagging local authorities and elected officials, demanding urgent repairs. “This is Southern Peripheral Road, a so-called premium stretch! How can a road just collapse like this?” posted X user @vani_mehrotra
, sharing visuals of the stranded truck. Others have called Gurugram “Kudagram,” criticizing the Municipal Corporation of Gurugram (MCG) for failing to address long-standing issues like poor drainage and shoddy road maintenance.

The MCG, responding to the outcry, stated that teams are on the ground, deploying machinery to drain stormwater and address the sinkhole. However, locals remain skeptical, pointing to a history of cosmetic fixes and unfulfilled promises. A similar incident on SPR in May 2025, where a 10-meter stretch collapsed due to delays in a drainage project, had already raised alarms about the road’s structural integrity.

This latest mishap adds to Gurugram’s monsoon woes, with waterlogged streets, submerged vehicles, and hours-long traffic jams becoming a recurring nightmare. Areas like MG Road, National Highway 8, and Udyog Vihar have also reported severe flooding, leaving office-goers and residents stranded. The district administration has issued a work-from-home advisory for July 10 to ease traffic congestion, but for many, the damage is already done.

As recovery efforts continue, the incident on Southern Peripheral Road serves as a grim wake-up call for Gurugram’s civic authorities. With the monsoon season in full swing, residents are demanding more than just quick fixes—they want a city that can withstand the rain.
