Lawlessness Prevails in BJP-Rule, Says Congress Spokesperson After Sand Mafia Gunfire Incident

In a serious political escalation, Chhattisgarh Pradesh Congress Committee spokesperson Kamaljeet Singh Pintu has slammed the BJP-led state government over deteriorating law and order, alleging that mafias are operating with impunity under the protection of those in power.

Addressing media in Rajnandgaon, Pintu said, “Crime is rising across the state. Under BJP rule, mafia networks — particularly those involved in illegal sand mining — are thriving. Not only is large-scale illegal excavation underway, but now these mafias are also attacking civilians with firearms.”

Referring to a recent incident in Rajim, where journalists were assaulted by sand smugglers, Pintu linked it to another violent episode on Wednesday night in Mohad ward of Rajnandgaon city. According to reports, sand mafia operatives fired 4–5 rounds at local residents who tried to stop illegal mining. The attack left three people injured, including the chairman of the ward development committee.

Pintu condemned the shooting and criticized Deputy Chief Minister and Home Minister Vijay Sharma, stating, “This shooting happened in Rajnandgaon — the Home Minister’s own district. If this is the state of law and order in his area, what message does it send to the rest of Chhattisgarh?”

He further pointed out that Rajnandgaon is also the constituency of Assembly Speaker Dr. Raman Singh, yet the district remains plagued by criminal activity and mafia dominance. “This is no longer just illegal mining — it’s open warfare on common people. Residents are being shot at for raising their voices,” he said.

Raising suspicion about political collusion, Pintu questioned how such brazen violence could occur without support from within the system. “How can outsiders, criminals from other states, smuggle sand and fire bullets without political protection?” he asked.

He called the current administration “a failure” and denounced its tall claims of “good governance.” “The government boasts about ‘su-shasan’ (good governance), but in reality, mafias are firing bullets at the public,” said Pintu.

The Congress party has demanded immediate action against the accused and called for stricter enforcement against illegal mining and mafia activity across the state.
