The Prime Minister Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana is emerging as a significant source of relief from electricity bills and an additional income opportunity for rural households. In a notable example from Karmari Gram Panchayat in Chhuriya development block, Sarpanch Deendayal Sahu has reduced his household electricity bill to zero after installing a rooftop solar plant.

Sarpanch Deendayal Sahu said he learned about the Prime Minister Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana through Chhuriya Janpad Panchayat. After receiving information about the scheme, he contacted an authorised vendor and studied the details of the installation process and available benefits.

He subsequently decided to install a 3-kilowatt rooftop solar system at his residence. The total cost of the plant was approximately ₹1.90 lakh, for which he obtained a loan from the Karmari Gramin Bank. After installation, he received a government subsidy of ₹1.08 lakh, significantly reducing the financial burden.

Monthly bill of ₹1,200–1,500 reduced to zero

Sahu said that before the installation of the solar plant, his monthly electricity bill ranged between ₹1,200 and ₹1,500. However, after installing the rooftop solar system, his electricity bill has become completely zero.

He said his household’s electricity consumption is relatively low, while the 3-kilowatt solar plant generates sufficient electricity. The surplus power is being supplied to the electricity grid, for which he is expected to receive an additional annual income of approximately ₹4,500 to ₹4,600 from the electricity department.

Rural residents inspired to adopt rooftop solar

Sarpanch Deendayal Sahu said that after witnessing the benefits of the Prime Minister Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, several residents of Karmari Gram Panchayat are also being encouraged to install rooftop solar systems at their homes.

He said the scheme can help households reduce their electricity expenses and create opportunities for additional income in the future. Sahu appealed to citizens to make maximum use of the Prime Minister Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana.

He also expressed his gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai for the scheme.
