Tensions escalated between India and Pakistan on Thursday as a drone struck the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium just hours before a scheduled Pakistan Super League (PSL) match. The stadium was due to host a match between Peshawar Zalmi and Karachi Kings at 8 PM, but the situation has cast a shadow over the sporting event.
The drone strike is being linked to the broader military flare-up between the two nations. Earlier in the day, Pakistan reportedly attempted to target 15 military installations in India. In retaliation, Indian forces destroyed Pakistan’s air defence radar systems located in Lahore.
While no casualties have been officially reported from the stadium incident, the timing has raised major security concerns, especially with a public sports event on the calendar.
Pakistan Army spokesperson Lt Gen Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry, speaking to media earlier, claimed that several hostile drones had been neutralised in key locations across the country—including Lahore, Gujranwala, Chakwal, Bahawalpur, Miano, Karachi, Chhor, Rawalpindi, and Attock—amid heightened surveillance.
Authorities have yet to confirm whether the PSL match will proceed as planned or be postponed due to security concerns. As of now, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is coordinating with local authorities for an assessment.
The drone strike adds a volatile dimension to the ongoing conflict and raises further questions about the security of public venues amidst cross-border tensions.
