A tense situation unfolded in Bhabanipur on Saturday when election rallies by Trinamool Congress (TMC) supremo and Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and BJP Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari were held in close proximity, leading to a confrontation between supporters of the two parties. Police and Rapid Action Force (RAF) personnel quickly intervened to prevent the situation from escalating further. No major injuries were reported.
Mamata Banerjee was addressing a public meeting when she alleged that high-decibel loudspeakers from the nearby BJP rally disrupted her speech. She described the act as “undemocratic” and abruptly walked off the stage, apologising to her supporters before leaving. Shortly afterwards, groups of TMC workers moved towards the BJP gathering site. Both sides then raised competing slogans — “Jai Bangla” from TMC supporters and “Jai Shri Ram” from BJP workers — creating a charged atmosphere.

Security forces, including RAF personnel, formed a human chain to separate the two groups and restored calm. The TMC has since filed a complaint accusing the BJP of violating the Model Code of Conduct (MCC). Suvendu Adhikari denied any deliberate disruption and hit back strongly, terming the TMC’s reaction as “goonda raj, jungle raj”. He said, “We are trying to end it. Whatever TMC does will backfire. This time it will not be one-sided. Drive away the goons, save Bengal.”
Latest Situation on Mamata Banerjee (TMC) and Suvendu Adhikari (BJP)
Mamata Banerjee, the sitting TMC MLA from Bhabanipur (often called her “Kolkata throne”), is campaigning vigorously ahead of the second phase of polling on April 29, 2026. She has accused the opposition of deliberate interference and hinted at legal action. TMC leaders have also raised concerns about alleged bias by police in other areas like Nandigram.
Suvendu Adhikari, BJP’s prominent face and projected Chief Ministerial candidate, is contesting from both Bhabanipur and Nandigram. He has launched sharp attacks on the TMC, claiming the party will be “wiped out” this time due to alleged corruption and “appeasement politics”. Adhikari has repeatedly alleged voter intimidation and threats by TMC-backed elements in various constituencies.
This incident in Bhabanipur comes amid heightened political temperatures in West Bengal ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections. The first phase recorded a high voter turnout of around 91-93%, but several areas have seen allegations of violence, booth-level tensions, and mutual accusations of intimidation from both TMC and BJP sides. Similar reports of workers coming face-to-face and minor scuffles have surfaced from other places like Howrah and South Dinajpur, though the Bhabanipur event directly involved the two top leaders and has gone viral on social media platforms.

Police have tightened security in Bhabanipur and adjoining areas with drone surveillance and additional paramilitary deployment. The Election Commission is closely monitoring the situation as campaigning for the second phase intensifies.
What this means for the polls: As according to our special correspondent Ms.Soumya Tiwari ,,Bhabanipur remains a crucial battleground. Mamata Banerjee has held the seat since 2011, while Suvendu Adhikari — who defeated her in Nandigram in 2021 — is eyeing a major upset for the BJP. The parallel rallies and subsequent clash highlight the razor-sharp rivalry between the two leaders and parties as Bengal prepares for a high-stakes verdict.
This is the ground situation as of April 26, 2026 morning. Both parties continue aggressive campaigning, but authorities have urged restraint to ensure free and fair polling.
