Social, Political and Religious Representatives Share Views on UCC During Committee’s Introductory Meeting

The Uniform Civil Code (UCC) Committee constituted by the Chhattisgarh government has begun a process of public consultation and deliberation aimed at making a proposed UCC framework practical, inclusive and beneficial to the people of the state.
As part of the consultation process, a group discussion and introductory meeting of the committee was held at the District Panchayat conference hall in Rajnandgaon.
The meeting was chaired by retired IAS officer M.K. Raut, who heads the state’s Uniform Civil Code Committee. Senior advocate Mohan Pawar and retired principal Dr Jyoti Rani Singh were also present.
Discussions on Marriage, Divorce, Inheritance and Live-in Relationships
Representatives of various social, political and religious organisations openly shared their views on several sensitive issues associated with the proposed UCC.
The discussions covered subjects including marriage, divorce, inheritance, maintenance and live-in relationships.
The participants discussed a wide range of aspects, from traditional social practices and community beliefs to modern legal reforms.
Representatives expressed views both in favour of and against the implementation of a Uniform Civil Code in Chhattisgarh, offering suggestions for consideration by the committee.
Divisional Commissioner Satyanarayan Rathore, Collector Jitendra Yadav and CEO Zila Panchayat Durga Prasad Adhikari were also present at the meeting.
Representatives From Different Communities Participate
The consultation brought together representatives from a wide cross-section of social, political and religious organisations from Rajnandgaon, Kabirdham, Khairagarh-Chhuikhadan-Gandai and Mohla-Manpur-Ambagarh Chowki districts.
Among those who participated were Bharat Verma, Vice-President of the District Cooperative Central Bank; former MLA Vinod Khandekar; Buddhist community representative Dr Munna Lal Nandeshwar; Jain community representative Narendra Bothra; and Balchand Qureshi, President of the Youth Congress Committee, Manpur, and representative of the tribal community.
Others included Govind Shah Walko, President, Sarva Adivasi Samaj, Mohla; Lalit Kosare, President, Buddhist Society; Chandra Shekhar Mandloi, President, Adivasi God Samaj, Chhuriya; advocate Sharda Tiwari; Shobha Shankar, Shiv Sena district president, Ambagarh Chowki; Paul John from the Christian community, Khairagarh; advocate and Khairagarh councillor Chandra Shekhar Yadav; and District Panchayat member Prashant Kodape.
Representatives also included Noharuram Kumeti, Block President, God Samaj; Vishwanath Yadav from Yadav Samaj, Dongargarh; Jan Mohammad Memon of Sadar Jama Masjid, Chhuriya; Krishna Kaushik, District Auditor, Sen Samaj, Ambagarh Chowki; retired principal Dr Sadhana Agrawal, Khairagarh; Mukesh Sinha, President, Sinha Kalar Samaj, Mohla; and Amar Singh Wasnik from Buddhist Society, Rajnandgaon.

Representatives including Shravan Kumar Sinha, Secretary, Dadesna Kalar Samaj, Kabirdham; Madanlal Sahu, President, District Sahu Sangh; Rupendra Jaiswal, District President, Kalar Samaj, Kabirdham; Thakurram Pal from Gadariya Samaj; Bhagwan Singh Patel, Patron, Patel Samaj, Kabirdham; Ramesh Kujur, President, Oraon Samaj; and Manglu Tulavi, Vice-President, Block God Samaj, Manpur, also participated.
Committee to Prepare Draft Based on Public Suggestions
Members of the UCC Committee informed participants that a draft will be prepared on the basis of suggestions received from social, political and religious organisations during the consultation process.
Legal advisers Pranjal Verma and Akshat Agrawal gave a detailed PowerPoint presentation explaining the concept of the Uniform Civil Code, its subject matter and the broader framework of the consultation.
The committee also shared its official website and email address for receiving suggestions from the public.

The consultation meeting was attended by Additional Collector C.L. Markandey, along with officials and representatives of social, political and religious organisations from Rajnandgaon and the neighbouring districts.
The meeting marked another step in the state government’s consultation process on the proposed Uniform Civil Code, with the committee seeking views from diverse sections of society before preparing its draft.
