The Nutrition Rehabilitation Centres (NRCs) operating across Rajnandgaon district are delivering effective and measurable results in the fight against severe malnutrition. Focused interventions, coordinated departmental efforts, and improved service delivery have significantly strengthened the district’s nutrition programme.
Collector Jitendra Yadav reviewed the functioning of NRCs and instructed officials from the Health Department and the Women & Child Development Department to ensure efficient and seamless implementation. He emphasized that the NRC programme is one of the government’s flagship initiatives aimed at building a malnutrition-free society and reducing the district’s malnutrition rate through unified efforts across departments.

At the NRCs located in the District Hospital, Rajnandgaon, and the Community Health Centre, Dongargarh, severely malnourished children are being admitted and provided free treatment, protein- and vitamin-rich meals, and necessary medication to help them transition towards normal nutritional status. Nodal officers have been directed to support referral and admission processes, while feeding demonstrators have been asked to assist mothers with feeding practices and protocol-based care.
The staff nurses and feeding demonstrators at the NRCs are ensuring that malnourished children visiting OPD, IPD, and Infant & Young Child Feeding Counselling Centres are identified and admitted as per standard protocols. NRCs are also providing a child-friendly environment with play activities to promote emotional well-being alongside medical recovery.

Coordination through Anganwadi workers and Mitanins has enabled timely identification of severely malnourished children, who are then referred to NRCs at the District Hospital and CHC Dongargarh for treatment. Additionally, the district is running the Poth Laika programme in collaboration with NRLM to further strengthen community-level nutrition awareness and monitoring.

Screening data from NRC OPDs is being systematically maintained and reviewed regularly to track progress and ensure accountability. Both NRC facilities have dedicated 10-bed wards for treating severely malnourished children. Each child receives up to 15 days of free care, including therapeutic feeding and essential medicines.
Between April 2024 and October 2025, the NRCs successfully treated 484 severely malnourished children, marking a significant milestone in the district’s efforts to combat childhood malnutrition.
