City politics has heated up following the increase in property tax imposed by the Municipal Corporation. By the end of March, the civic administration achieved nearly 80 percent of its revenue target, collecting approximately ₹5 crore.
To provide relief to citizens, the deadline for tax payment has been extended until April 30, and certain concessions have also been granted. Despite these measures, public dissatisfaction over the revised tax structure continues to grow.
Complaints of Sharp Tax Hike Across Wards
Under the new assessment, complaints have surfaced regarding property tax increases of more than double in several wards. Reports suggest that nearly eight wards have witnessed significant hikes, while partial relief has been extended in four wards.
Additionally, the inclusion of vacant plots and residential courtyards within the tax ambit has further intensified resentment among residents. The revised tax structure is reportedly impacting homeowners, traders, and the middle-class population directly.
Congress Stages Municipal Corporation Gherao
Taking up the issue, the Indian National Congress organized a large-scale protest and laid siege to the Municipal Corporation premises. The demonstration was led by City District Congress President Jitendra Mudaliyar and Leader of Opposition in the Municipal Corporation Santosh Pille.
A large number of party workers and office bearers participated in the protest, raising slogans and delivering sharp speeches against what they described as an anti-public tax increase. Congress leaders demanded immediate rollback of the revised property tax rates.
Three Generations of Congress Leadership Unite
A notable feature of the protest was the visible unity of three generations of Congress leadership, which added significant political weight to the agitation.

Senior leaders including three-time Cabinet Minister Dhanesh Patila, former Mineral Corporation Chairman Kutubuddin Solanki, former Deputy Mayor Ramesh Dakaliya, former Mayor Hema Deshmukh, senior leader and former District President Kulbir Chhabra, along with Ramesh Rathore and Dinesh Sharma, were present at the protest.
Participation from middle-aged leaders and a large number of youth workers indicated that the Congress intends to take the issue to grassroots levels.
Protest Intensifies Over Absence of Civic Officials
The situation escalated during the gherao when both the Municipal Commissioner and Mayor were absent from the venue. Congress leaders termed this as administrative indifference and expressed strong resentment.
Eventually, a memorandum demanding withdrawal of the tax hike was submitted to Executive Engineer Deepak Khande and Revenue Officer Rajesh Tiwari. The party warned that the agitation would be intensified if prompt action is not taken.
Questions Raised Over New Assessment Guidelines
Congress leaders have also raised concerns regarding the newly implemented guidelines. Confusion and dissatisfaction have emerged among citizens over valuation differences between kutcha and pucca houses, tax calculation based on multiple floors, and varying rates depending on shop locations.
Political Implications and Public Response
Political analysts believe that the issue is rapidly gaining public support for the Congress, potentially posing a political challenge for the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
If a timely solution is not reached, observers warn that the matter could evolve into a larger public movement. For now, the city’s attention remains focused on the next course of action by the Municipal Corporation administration and the state government.
