“Major Labour Law Reforms Are a Landmark Victory for Workers” – Yogesh Datt Mishra

Chhattisgarh Labour Welfare Board Chairman Welcomes Centre’s Overhaul of 70-Year-Old Labour Laws

Yogesh Datt Mishra, Chairman of the Chhattisgarh Labour Welfare Board and a prominent labour leader of the region, has welcomed the Central Government’s comprehensive labour law reforms, calling them a “long-awaited gift” for India’s workforce.

Mishra noted that the labour laws enacted in 1948 were largely based on the framework of the colonial-era labour regulations, designed for an industrial environment very different from today’s rapidly evolving landscape. The new reforms, he said, have been crafted keeping in mind the needs of modern industry and the rights of workers, ensuring stronger legal protections and greater fairness in the workplace.

Highlighting key features of the new legislation, Mishra said the biggest achievement is the guarantee of minimum wages across the country. By establishing a national floor wage, no state will be able to set wages below the prescribed threshold—marking a “historic win” for millions of workers. The reforms also reinforce the principle of equal pay for equal work.

He added that provisions related to provident fund, health security, and insurance coverage have been expanded to include workers in the unorganised sector. Under the new rules, it will be illegal to hire workers without providing an official appointment letter, and unorganised workers will receive extensive protection under social security schemes.

Workers will now have the right to overtime wages for any work performed beyond scheduled hours. Minimum wages, social security benefits, and basic protections have been strengthened for domestic workers, small establishment workers, and women labourers. Women employees will also benefit from enhanced maternity provisions and improved safety norms for night shifts.

Mishra also welcomed the expanded definition of ‘family’, which now includes parents-in-law, enabling more inclusive benefits for workers.

Praising the Modi Government for prioritising labour rights, Mishra said the reforms would not only ensure the welfare of crores of workers but also help maintain industrial peace and pave the way for stronger economic growth.
