The Government of India’s Census 2027 exercise has officially commenced in Chhattisgarh with the launch of the first phase — house listing and housing enumeration. The large-scale field operation began on May 1 and will continue until May 30, 2026.

For the statewide exercise, 51,300 enumerators and 9,000 supervisors have been deployed, who are visiting households across urban and rural areas to collect essential demographic and housing-related information.

This census marks a historic transition as the entire exercise is being conducted in digital mode for the first time. Enumerators are recording information through a mobile application, capturing responses to 33 questions related to housing conditions, family facilities, and household assets.

The digital process aims to improve accuracy, transparency, and efficiency in data collection while reducing manual errors traditionally associated with paper-based surveys.

Administration Adopts Strict Monitoring Measures

The administration has taken a firm stand to ensure smooth execution of census duties. In Raipur Municipal Corporation, 44 employees who remained absent from assigned census work have been issued notices under the Census Act, 1948 and the Chhattisgarh Civil Conduct Rules.

Officials clarified that refusing census duty or creating obstacles in the process is a punishable offence under law.

Enthusiasm and Early Achievements Across Districts

The campaign has generated significant enthusiasm across the state. In a notable example from Bastar district, an enumerator in Gatam village under Tokapal tehsil successfully completed the assigned work on the very first day despite challenging geographical conditions.

District Collectors and Municipal Commissioners personally visited field locations to inspect progress and encourage census workers.

The impact of digital literacy was also evident during the self-enumeration phase, where 1,49,862 families completed their own census entries through the official web portal between April 16 and April 30.

Data Security and Privacy Assured

The Census Directorate has assured citizens that all personal information collected during the exercise will remain strictly confidential under the provisions of the Census Act, 1948.

Authorities clarified that census data cannot be used for taxation purposes, police investigations, or court proceedings. Individual information will not be accessible even through Right to Information (RTI) requests. The collected data will solely be used for national planning and formulation of welfare policies.

Appeal to Citizens for Cooperation

The administration has appealed to residents across the state to provide accurate and truthful information when enumerators visit their homes. Officials emphasized that public participation in the census is not merely a procedural requirement but a valuable contribution toward nation-building and development planning.
