Police deny allegations of protection to illegal liquor trade; say misinformation being spread to damage law enforcement image

Dongargarh, known as a major center of religious faith, has once again come into discussion over the issue of illegal liquor trade. For years, the region has faced allegations linked to unlawful alcohol activities. Due to its proximity to inter-state borders, movement towards Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh remains easy, which has previously led to discussions about possible networks involved in illegal operations.
Reports of fake holograms and inter-state supply rackets had also surfaced in the past, though the complete details of such cases have never been fully established.
Viral Pamphlet Sparks Controversy
Amid this background, a pamphlet recently went viral on social media alleging that illegal liquor trade in Dongargarh continues under alleged protection. The circulation of the pamphlet raised questions about the image of the police and created confusion among the public.
Taking the matter seriously, the police issued an official press release denying the claims. Authorities clarified that continuous and effective action is being carried out against illegal liquor activities in Dongargarh.
Police Reject Allegations as Misleading
According to police officials, several cases have been registered over the past month, resulting in arrests and seizure of substantial quantities of liquor and narcotic substances.
Police stated that the viral pamphlet is misleading and baseless, allegedly circulated with the intention of damaging the region’s reputation and questioning ongoing police action. Officials further indicated that individuals responsible for spreading such misinformation would be identified and strict legal action would follow.
Crackdown on Illegal Liquor Intensified
Police records reveal that within the last month alone, 42 cases were registered at the Dongargarh police station under the Excise Act, leading to the arrest of 45 accused persons. Large quantities of illegal liquor were seized under various legal provisions.
Additionally, action was taken under the NDPS Act, resulting in the seizure of 5.6 kilograms of cannabis, valued at approximately ₹1 lakh.
District-Level Action Continues
At the district level, enforcement drives have also intensified. Over the past month across Rajnandgaon district, police registered 125 cases under the Excise Act and arrested 147 accused persons. During these operations, a total of 305 litres of illegal liquor was seized.
Police officials said legal action is being pursued rigorously against offenders under relevant sections of law.
Debate Over Image vs. Reality
The incident has reignited debate over whether Dongargarh is being deliberately defamed or whether past perceptions are fueling the rapid spread of rumours. Police have reiterated that there will be no compromise on law and order and that the campaign against illegal activities will continue with full force.
