Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday inaugurated the year-long celebrations marking the 150th anniversary of India’s national song Vande Mataram at the Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium in New Delhi. The iconic patriotic composition, written by Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay in 1875 and featured in his novel Anandamath, played a defining role in inspiring the Swadeshi Movement and India’s freedom struggle.

Addressing a large gathering of students, cultural groups, and youth organizations, PM Modi described Vande Mataram as a “mantra of national unity and emotional strength”, calling for future generations to understand its historical depth and cultural resonance.

The Prime Minister also took aim at the partial renditions of the national song that became common after 1937, stating that reducing Vande Mataram to selective lines “dilutes its spirit”. He urged educational institutions and cultural bodies to ensure the complete and correct rendition is promoted across schools and public ceremonies.

The Government of India has planned year-long cultural, academic, and digital engagement programs through 2025–26 to mark the anniversary. These include multi-lingual musical performances, regional art collaborations, calligraphy exhibitions, and youth-led heritage research competitions.

The commemoration also aligns with India’s ongoing diplomatic and cultural outreach, including the BIMSTEC Marine Cultural Cooperation Conference held in Kochi, emphasizing India’s civilizational ties with the Indian Ocean region.

Meanwhile, the democratic momentum in the country continued as the Bihar Assembly elections witnessed a 64.7% voter turnout, with political observers noting that the PM’s unity message during the event subtly connects to themes of social harmony and national cohesion.
