In a significant move to empower India’s agricultural sector, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated two flagship farmer-centric schemes on October 11, 2025, in Delhi, with a combined investment exceeding Rs 35,440 crore. The first scheme, the Dhana-Dhanya Krishi Yojana, focuses on promoting crop diversification by providing financial incentives and technical support to farmers shifting from water-intensive crops like rice and wheat to pulses, millets, and oilseeds.

This initiative is expected to benefit over 1.7 crore farmers across 100 districts, particularly in water-stressed regions such as Punjab, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh, where groundwater depletion has become a critical issue. The second program, the Krishak Samriddhi Yojana, introduces direct benefit transfers for small and marginal farmers, including subsidies for modern irrigation equipment and soil health cards, aiming to increase productivity by 20% in the next three years.

Speaking at the event, PM Modi emphasized the government’s commitment to doubling farmers’ incomes by 2025, highlighting how these schemes align with the vision of ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ by reducing import dependency on edible oils and pulses. The launch coincides with the ongoing Kharif harvest season, and early registrations have already surpassed 50 lakh, with digital platforms enabling seamless enrollment. Experts hail this as a timely intervention, potentially stabilizing food prices and enhancing rural employment amid rising global uncertainties.
