Continuous efforts at the community level for the management of malnutrition are bringing positive changes in the nutritional status of children across the district. Young Yaakshi Pal, a resident of Boirdih village, is one such example, having successfully overcome malnutrition and reached the normal nutrition category.

Yaakshi is the daughter of Lakshmi Pal and Surya Prakash Pal. During her initial nutritional assessment, she was identified under the category of Severe Acute Malnutrition (SAM). At that time, her weight was recorded at 4.9 kilograms, while her height was 65 centimetres.

Due to the family’s financial circumstances and the parents’ daily work commitments, Yaakshi’s care was primarily being managed by her grandparents, Umashankar and Geeta.

To improve her nutritional status, Yaakshi was linked to the community-level Severe Malnutrition Management Programme. Under the programme, her weight and height were measured regularly, along with follow-up, additional take-home rations and nutritional counselling.
