In a transformative leap for India’s spiritual and tourism landscape, Adani Enterprises Limited (AEL), the flagship incubator of the Adani Portfolio, has clinched a prestigious Letter of Award (LoA) from the National Highways Logistics Management Limited (NHLML) to construct a state-of-the-art 12.9-kilometer ropeway linking Sonprayag to the sacred Kedarnath Temple in Uttarakhand. Valued at ₹4,081 crore, this ambitious project under the government’s Parvatmala Pariyojana promises to revolutionize the arduous pilgrimage route, reducing the grueling 9-hour uphill trek to a mere 36 minutes while ensuring safer, more accessible journeys for the temple’s nearly 20 lakh annual visitors.

Nestled in the Garhwal Himalayas at an elevation of over 3,500 meters, Kedarnath—one of Hinduism’s 12 Jyotirlingas—has long drawn millions of devotees seeking divine solace amid breathtaking alpine vistas. Traditionally, pilgrims endure a strenuous 16-kilometer uphill path from Sonprayag, the last motorable point, often relying on ponies, palanquins, or helicopters amid treacherous terrain prone to landslides and harsh weather. This new ropeway, developed on a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model with revenue-sharing, introduces cutting-edge Tri-Cable Detachable Gondola (3S) technology, capable of ferrying 1,800 passengers per hour in each direction—translating to a staggering 18,000 daily commuters during peak seasons.

Each gondola, accommodating up to 36 passengers, will glide smoothly over rugged valleys, offering panoramic views of snow-capped peaks and the Mandakini River, turning a test of endurance into a serene aerial odyssey.Announced on September 15, the project marks a pivotal milestone in the National Ropeways Development Programme—Parvatmala Pariyojana—launched to connect remote hilly regions with eco-friendly transport solutions.

Construction is slated for completion in six years, after which AEL will operate and maintain the facility for 29 years, injecting vitality into Uttarakhand’s economy through job creation, skill development, and tourism amplification. “The Kedarnath ropeway is more than an engineering project—it is a bridge between devotion and modern infrastructure,” proclaimed Gautam Adani, Chairman of the Adani Group, encapsulating the synergy of faith and futuristic engineering.

This initiative arrives at a critical juncture, as Kedarnath’s pilgrimage surges post the 2013 flash floods that underscored the need for resilient infrastructure. By alleviating congestion on narrow trails and minimizing environmental impact—ropeways emit far less carbon than roads or helipads—the project aligns with sustainable development goals. Experts hail it as a game-changer for inclusive tourism, enabling elderly, differently-abled, and families to partake in the yatra without physical strain, while boosting local livelihoods through ancillary services like eco-resorts and handicraft hubs.

Adani Enterprises’ foray into this domain builds on its robust infrastructure legacy, spanning over 5,000 lane kilometers in roads and highways since 2018. The Kedarnath ropeway not only democratizes access to one of India’s holiest sites but also sets a blueprint for similar ventures, fostering economic corridors in the Himalayas. As construction ramps up, anticipation builds among devotees worldwide, envisioning a future where spiritual quests harmonize with technological marvels. This is more than a ride—it’s a testament to India’s ascent as a global innovator in devotional connectivity.
