On the occasion of Independence Day, Chhattisgarh Assembly Speaker Dr. Raman Singh planted a Maulshree sapling at the Bharat Ratna Late Atal Bihari Vajpayee Government Medical College campus in Rajnandgaon under the ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’ campaign.
Highlighting the importance of environmental conservation, plantation and ecological balance, Dr. Singh appealed to citizens to plant more fruit-bearing and useful trees and ensure their proper care.
Atal Bihari Vajpayee Medical College a Matter of Pride
Dr. Raman Singh said India has completed 80 years of its journey since Independence. He described the medical college established in Rajnandgaon in the name of Bharat Ratna Late Atal Bihari Vajpayee as a matter of pride for everyone.
He said Chhattisgarh was created under the leadership of Atal Bihari Vajpayee and that a large number of medical colleges, nursing colleges and other healthcare institutions have since been developed across the state.

The Assembly Speaker also expressed happiness over the green surroundings of the medical college campus.
‘Nature Is the Greatest Healer’
Dr. Singh said, “Nature is the greatest healer.” He highlighted the importance of the five elements—earth, water, fire, air and sky—which form the foundation of human life and the natural world.
He said nature provides essential resources such as food, water, air and solar energy free of cost. Recalling the experience of the COVID-19 pandemic, he said people had realized the importance of oxygen when many struggled to obtain oxygen cylinders.
He stressed that protecting trees and increasing plantation are essential for human survival. According to him, deterioration of environmental balance can pose a serious threat to human existence, while the consequences of polluted water and air are already visible in major cities.
Future Doctors Urged to Take Responsibility for Nature
Dr. Raman Singh urged medical students to make environmental conservation part of their responsibility. He said medical students are future doctors, while doctors have an important role in protecting human life.
He also encouraged doctors, nursing staff, sanitation workers and other employees who have performed well at the medical college. He suggested that more employees delivering outstanding services should be recognized on Independence Day in the coming years.
Appeal to Plant Local and Fruit-Bearing Trees
Dr. Singh appealed to citizens to plant local, fruit-bearing and useful species such as mango, jamun, peepal, banyan, amla, harra, baheda and kusum.
He emphasized that plantation should not end with planting a sapling. Regular care and protection are equally important to ensure that the plants survive and grow.
He also encouraged citizens to make greater use of solar energy, describing sunlight as an inexhaustible source of clean energy.

Emphasis on Clean Energy
The Assembly Speaker urged people to adopt solar energy and actively participate in environmental conservation initiatives.
He said the reputation of healthcare institutions is built through the dedication and service of doctors, nursing staff and other employees. He congratulated the doctors and staff of Government Medical College Rajnandgaon for their services.
Mayor Pays Tribute to Freedom Fighters
Mayor Madhusudan Yadav paid tribute to the freedom fighters who sacrificed their lives for India’s Independence and extended Independence Day greetings to citizens.
He said the Bharat Ratna Late Atal Bihari Vajpayee Government Medical College, Rajnandgaon, is providing life-saving healthcare services to lakhs of people.
The Mayor appreciated the dedication of doctors and employees and said 200 saplings would be planted on the medical college campus for the upcoming physiotherapy centre.
Rajnandgaon Targets Plantation of Around 10,000 Saplings
Madhusudan Yadav said around 10,000 saplings are being planted in Rajnandgaon this year. Referring to the severe heat experienced last summer, he stressed the importance of planting fruit-bearing and shade-giving trees in public spaces as well as residential areas.
He appealed to every citizen to join the ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’ campaign and plant trees. He said saplings are being made available to citizens through the Municipal Corporation, Forest Department and other channels.
