The Transport Department has issued a public advisory urging citizens to remain vigilant against cyber fraud being carried out in the name of e-challans. Officials have warned that cybercriminals are creating fake websites and clone pages resembling the official transport department portal and sending fraudulent messages to vehicle owners.

According to the Additional Regional Transport Officer, fraudsters are misleading citizens by claiming that traffic violations have been recorded against their vehicles. Victims are then sent fake links and messages that pressure them into making immediate payments or risk legal action.

Fraudsters Target Personal and Banking Information

Officials stated that after users click on such fraudulent links, they are often asked to provide sensitive information, including personal details, bank account numbers, debit or credit card information, and UPI credentials. In some cases, citizens are also instructed to download suspicious mobile applications, which can compromise the security of their devices and financial accounts.

The department noted that these fraudulent links are frequently circulated through unknown mobile numbers and typically use suspicious domain names instead of official government domains.

Verify Challans Only Through the Official Portal

Citizens have been advised not to click on any suspicious links, shortened URLs or unknown websites claiming to represent the transport department.

For verification of genuine e-challans, vehicle owners should use only the official e-challan portal of the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways. Users can access the portal, select the online challan verification option, enter the challan number and captcha code, and view details after OTP-based authentication.

Officials clarified that all valid e-challans issued by the Police Department or Transport Department enforcement teams are communicated only through the authorized e-challan system and sent to the registered mobile number of the vehicle owner.

Report Suspicious Activity Immediately

The Transport Department has appealed to citizens not to make online payments to unknown individuals and to exercise caution while conducting digital or banking transactions.

In cases involving suspicious calls, messages, links or mobile applications, citizens are encouraged to immediately report the matter to the nearest police station. Complaints can also be lodged through the national cybercrime helpline number 1930 or the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal.

The department emphasized that public awareness and vigilance remain the most effective safeguards against cyber fraud and urged citizens to stay alert, informed and digitally secure.
