A heartening success story has emerged from Rajnandgaon, where the district administration’s ‘Poth Laika’ initiative has helped twin children overcome malnutrition and regain healthy growth through sustained care and community support.

The initiative, aimed at eradicating child malnutrition, focuses on identifying severely undernourished children and bringing them into the normal category through targeted interventions such as nutritional support, regular health monitoring, and parental awareness programs.

One such inspiring case is that of Yamini Sahu from Karethi village. During her first pregnancy, she followed guidance provided by Mitanin health workers and Anganwadi staff, incorporating nutritious food into her daily diet and undergoing regular medical check-ups. It was during these check-ups that she discovered she was carrying twins, prompting her to pay extra attention to her health and nutrition.

After delivery, both infants were found to be underweight, weighing 1.95 kg and 1.82 kg respectively, placing them in the malnourished category. Initially concerned, the mother was reassured by health workers that proper nutrition, breastfeeding, and consistent monitoring could significantly improve the children’s condition.

Acting on this advice, Yamini Sahu ensured regular breastfeeding, provided nutritious food, and attended frequent health check-ups at the local health centre. She also actively participated in “Palak Chaupal” sessions आयोजित under the Poth Laika initiative, which provided her with essential knowledge on child care and nutrition.

Anganwadi worker Purnima Kande played a crucial role by regularly visiting the household and offering guidance on hygiene, nutrition, and child care practices.

As a result of these consistent efforts and coordinated support, both children have now shown remarkable improvement, with their weights increasing to 7 kg and 7.1 kg respectively—bringing them into the normal health category.

Officials stated that such outcomes highlight the effectiveness of community-based interventions and the importance of awareness among parents. The success of the initiative is being attributed to the combined efforts of the district administration, Mitanin workers, and Anganwadi staff.

Expressing gratitude, Yamini Sahu credited the initiative and frontline workers for saving her children’s lives. She also urged other mothers to actively participate in Anganwadi-led “Palak Chaupal” sessions and utilize available health services to ensure better nutrition and well-being for their children.
