The PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana is helping households adopt clean energy while significantly reducing electricity expenses. In Rajnandgaon district, Raman Nahata, a resident of Dongargaon and the owner of a paper cup manufacturing unit, has emerged as a beneficiary of the scheme by bringing his household electricity bill down to nearly zero while also using solar power to charge his electric vehicle.

Nahata said he installed a 3 kW rooftop solar power system at his residence around six months ago. Before switching to solar energy, his monthly electricity bill ranged between ₹1,600 and ₹1,800. The purchase of an electric vehicle further increased his electricity consumption, making the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana a cost-effective solution for his household.

He said he first learned about the scheme through his bank, whose officials assisted him with the application process, financial support, and other formalities. The rooftop solar system cost approximately ₹2.05 lakh, for which he received a bank loan of around ₹1.80 lakh after making the required down payment. He also received a subsidy of approximately ₹1.08 lakh from the Central and State governments within a short period, substantially reducing the overall cost of the installation.

According to Nahata, the rooftop solar system now generates sufficient electricity to meet his household requirements while also enabling him to charge his electric vehicle with solar energy. As a result, his electricity bill has fallen to nearly zero, significantly reducing his monthly expenditure. He said the investment is expected to deliver greater financial benefits over the long term.

Nahata described the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana as highly beneficial for ordinary households, noting that the government subsidy has made rooftop solar installations much more affordable than before.

He also said his experience has encouraged others to adopt solar energy. Inspired by his rooftop solar installation, two of his friends have already installed rooftop solar systems at their homes, while several other residents in the area have shown interest in the scheme after learning about its benefits.

Emphasising the environmental advantages of renewable energy, Nahata said solar power not only contributes to environmental conservation but also helps households manage their monthly budgets more effectively. He appealed to families with regular electricity expenses to take advantage of the scheme, saying it offers substantial long-term savings on power bills.

The PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana continues to promote clean energy adoption across the district while helping citizens reduce electricity costs and contribute to environmental sustainability.
