Chhattisgarh has raised its sugarcane procurement price from ₹355 to ₹425 per quintal, placing the state ahead of several major sugarcane-producing states in the price offered to farmers, according to the state government. The revised rate will also apply to sugarcane procured during the 2025–26 crushing season, ensuring that farmers who have already supplied their produce receive payment at the increased rate.
Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai said the prosperity of farmers forms the foundation of Chhattisgarh’s development. He emphasised that the state government is committed to ensuring better returns for agricultural produce, making farming more remunerative and strengthening the financial position of farming families.
The decision is intended to increase farmers’ income and improve the economic viability of sugarcane cultivation. The Chief Minister said the state government, under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, is working to increase agricultural income, reduce cultivation costs and make farming more profitable.
Farmers to Receive ₹70 More per Quintal
Under the revised procurement rate, sugarcane farmers will receive ₹70 more per quintal than under the previous rate of ₹355. Applying the new rate retrospectively to the 2025–26 crushing season will extend the benefit to farmers who have already sold their sugarcane during that period.
The government has also announced that a bonus of approximately ₹51.09 crore will be distributed among more than 31,000 farmers associated with the state’s four cooperative sugar mills.

The increase comes amid continuing efforts to improve the balance between agricultural production costs and farmers’ earnings. A higher procurement price is expected to provide additional income in proportion to the quantity of sugarcane supplied by each farmer.
The Chief Minister said farmers’ needs and concerns remain a priority for the government, adding that stronger agriculture supports stronger villages and contributes to the overall prosperity of the state.
Chhattisgarh’s Rate Compared with Other States
According to the information provided by the state government, Chhattisgarh’s revised procurement price is higher than the quoted rates in several major sugarcane-producing states.
| State | Sugarcane price per quintal |
|---|---|
| Chhattisgarh | ₹425 |
| Punjab | ₹416 |
| Haryana | ₹415 |
| Uttar Pradesh | ₹400 for early-maturing varieties |
In Maharashtra and Karnataka, payments are determined under the Central Government’s Fair and Remunerative Price (FRP) framework, along with factors such as sugar recovery and the arrangements of individual mills.
The Central Government has fixed the FRP for the 2026–27 season at ₹365 per quintal, based on a sugar recovery rate of 10.25%, according to the supplied information.
These rates operate under different state-level and central pricing arrangements. The comparison highlights Chhattisgarh’s higher announced procurement price while reflecting the different mechanisms used across states.
Four Cooperative Sugar Mills to Benefit Farmers
Chhattisgarh currently has four major cooperative sugar mills:
- Bhoramdev Cooperative Sugar Mill, Kawardha
- Mahamaya Cooperative Sugar Mill, Surajpur
- Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Cooperative Sugar Mill, Pandariya, Kabirdham
- Maa Danteshwari Maiya Cooperative Sugar Mill, Balod
More than 31,000 farmers associated with these mills are expected to benefit from the announced bonus distribution.

The state produces approximately 1.86 million to 2.04 million tonnes of sugarcane annually, according to the supplied figures. Although Chhattisgarh ranks 14th nationally in sugarcane production, the government says the higher procurement price places it at the forefront in terms of the price offered to farmers.
Sugarcane cultivation is undertaken on a significant scale in districts including Kabirdham, Surajpur, Jagdalpur, Surguja, Durg, Bilaspur and Raipur. Kabirdham, Jagdalpur and Surguja are identified in the source information among the major producing districts.
Focus on Farmers’ Income and Rural Prosperity
Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai said the government’s objective is to ensure that farmers receive better returns for their hard work and that agriculture becomes a sustainable and remunerative livelihood.
The revised price could also influence farmers’ future decisions regarding sugarcane cultivation, including the area under cultivation, production costs and expected returns.
By extending the higher rate to sugarcane already procured during the 2025–26 season, the government has sought to ensure that the benefit reaches farmers who supplied their produce before the announcement.
The state government has positioned the decision as part of its broader commitment to agricultural prosperity and rural development, with the aim of strengthening farming households and supporting the rural economy.
