A shift from traditional paddy cultivation to horticulture has proved life-changing for farmer Trivendra Sahu of Lammeta village in Chhuriya block, Rajnandgaon district, as bumper tomato production has brought him substantial income and new economic stability.

Under the National Horticulture Mission, Sahu received a government subsidy of around ₹2.5 lakh, which enabled him to adopt mulching-based tomato cultivation over 1.5 acres of land. With technical guidance and support from the Horticulture Department, the assistance was utilised for installing drip irrigation systems, procuring quality tomato saplings, fertilisers, and plant protection inputs.

The results were remarkable. Benefiting from high market demand and excellent crop yield, Sahu has so far recorded tomato sales worth nearly ₹10 lakh, earning a net profit of approximately ₹7 lakh. The produce has not only been sold in local markets of Rajnandgaon but also transported to New Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, and other states, highlighting the commercial potential of diversified farming.

Sahu planted the ‘Pari’ variety of tomatoes, which fetched attractive prices due to strong demand and superior quality. He has already sold around 1,000 crates of tomatoes, and harvesting is still ongoing. According to him, tomato harvesting will continue till March, ensuring sustained income over the coming months.

Sharing his experience, the farmer said that replacing paddy with tomato cultivation proved far more profitable and less risky when combined with modern agricultural techniques. He credited farmer-friendly government schemes for encouraging diversification into vegetables and horticultural crops, which have significantly improved his financial condition.

The success story of Trivendra Sahu stands as an example of how crop diversification, government support, and innovative farming practices can enhance farmers’ income and promote sustainable agriculture in the region.
