What initially appeared to be a local complaint has now taken the shape of a major and potentially organised network, as police investigation into an alleged religious conversion case in Rajnandgaon has revealed links extending to several districts of Chhattisgarh. The probe, initiated following a written complaint received on January 8, 2026, has led to what senior police officials describe as “shocking disclosures.”
The complaint, lodged at Sukuldehan police outpost under Lalbagh police station, alleged that a person in Dharmapur village was operating an ashram/church, keeping minor children under his custody, and engaging in activities related to religious conversion. Considering the seriousness of the allegations, a case was registered against David Chacko under Sections 3, 4 and 5 of the Chhattisgarh Religious Freedom Act, under the direction of Superintendent of Police Ms. Ankita Sharma and the supervision of City Superintendent of Police Ms. Vaishali Jain.

As the investigation progressed, multiple layers of the case began to unfold. Police seized several important documents, records, registers and other materials linked to the accused. Preliminary scrutiny of these materials has indicated that the alleged conversion activities were not limited to an individual, but were being carried out as part of a well-organised network.
According to police sources, the investigation has revealed that the network may be spread across multiple districts of Chhattisgarh, with indications of involvement of hundreds of individuals at different levels. Each suspected link is being examined systematically. The probe has also brought to light a significant amount of digital evidence. Police have seized laptops, tablets, iPads and mobile phones, containing digital documents, data and presentation material that are believed to hold crucial information.

One of the more startling recoveries includes solar-powered projectors, reportedly worth thousands of dollars. Investigators believe these devices were used in remote areas lacking electricity, enabling activities to be conducted in a planned and organised manner.
Based on the seized documents, the names of several other individuals have surfaced during the investigation. Notices have been issued to them for questioning to establish their roles, mutual connections and the overall structure of the alleged network. Simultaneously, police are conducting a detailed financial investigation to trace the source of funds used for running the ashram/church and to determine whether the money is linked to any other illegal or organised activities.

Rajnandgaon police have stated that the investigation is being carried out with complete impartiality, transparency and in strict accordance with the law. Under the leadership of SP Ankita Sharma, the probe has made it clear that no one is above the law, and strict legal action will be taken based on evidence that emerges.
While the investigation is still ongoing, the facts revealed so far are being viewed as deeply concerning and eye-opening, making the case one of serious significance for the district.
