A tense situation prevailed at Nandai Chowk on Monday afternoon after a Shivling, a Hanuman idol, and a trident (Trishul) installed along the roadside were removed by a group of youths, triggering strong public reaction and concerns over disturbance to communal harmony.

The incident occurred around 12 noon near Satnam Bhawan, where the religious site has stood for several years and holds deep spiritual significance for local residents. The spot is especially revered during the holy month of Shravan, when large numbers of devotees gather for ritual offerings and jalabhishek to Lord Shiva.

According to eyewitnesses, a few youths removed the Shivling and idols, claiming they intended to take them to a nearby river for “cooling.” As news spread, local resident Jaikishan Sharma rushed to the spot, questioned the youths, and advised them against immersing the religious symbols. He also informed other locals and recorded a video of the incident.

Sensing rising tension, the Shivling and idols were promptly brought back. However, by then, a large number of residents had gathered at Nandai Chowk, expressing anger and demanding strict action against those responsible. Members of various Hindu organisations were also present at the site.

On receiving information, police reached the area in strength. Additional Superintendent of Police Rahul Dev Sharma personally visited the spot, along with the concerned Station House Officer TI Aiman Sahu and other officials. The police managed to pacify the crowd and restore order, preventing the situation from escalating into violence.

The religious symbols have since been reinstalled at their original location. Officials stated that proper religious rituals, including re-consecration (pran-pratishtha), will also be conducted.
