The Rajnandgaon Municipal Corporation on Wednesday launched a district-wide awareness drive to popularize the PM Surya Ghar Free Electricity Scheme, with Municipal Corporation Chairman Paras Verma flagging off the “Surya Rath” campaign vehicle. The Rath will tour all 52 wards, spreading awareness about the benefits of solar energy, government support, and application procedures.

The initiative is being jointly organized with the electricity department. At a special program in the Town Hall, officials briefed citizens on the online application process for rooftop solar plants, necessary documents such as PAN, Aadhaar, bank passbook, income tax returns, and electricity bills, as well as vendor selection and installation procedures.
Stalls were also set up in the Municipal Corporation premises by registered vendors to provide detailed information and on-the-spot guidance to interested households. Chamber of Commerce representatives, councilors, Commissioner Atul Vishwakarma, Superintending Engineer Shankeshwar Kanwar, EE Mukesh Sahu, Birbal Uike, and other dignitaries attended the launch event.

The scheme, announced under the vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, seeks to make citizens energy self-reliant by promoting rooftop solar power. Beneficiaries will not only enjoy free, clean, and uninterrupted electricity but can also sell surplus power back to the grid via net metering. The government aims to install one crore rooftop solar plants nationwide by 2027, with Chhattisgarh alone targeting six lakh installations.
Under the scheme, households can receive up to ₹1,08,000 in subsidies: ₹45,000 for 1 kW, ₹90,000 for 2 kW, and ₹1,08,000 for 3 kW systems. Consumers can finance 90% of installation costs through low-interest loans, paying just 10% as down payment. The central and state governments have earmarked ₹1,800 crore for the program in Chhattisgarh.

Superintending Engineer Shankeshwar Kanwar informed that Rajnandgaon has already received 5,805 applications, of which 590 consumers have finalized vendors and 5,785 have secured approvals. So far, 225 households have installed rooftop solar panels, while 186 installations are in progress. A total of 159 beneficiaries have already received government subsidies.
Officials emphasized that the initiative not only reduces household electricity expenses but also creates local employment opportunities for solar panel installation and maintenance, improves energy access in rural areas, and contributes to a cleaner environment.
