Location: Rajnandgaon, India

Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Surgi, Rajnandgaon, has issued a special weather-based agricultural advisory for farmers in view of the possibility of heavy rainfall and strong winds across Chhattisgarh. The advisory follows a weather forecast from the India Meteorological Department (IMD), which indicates the likelihood of changing weather conditions due to a low-pressure area over the southeastern Bay of Bengal and associated cyclonic activity.

Wind speeds of 115 to 140 kilometres per hour have been forecast in connection with the cyclonic system. Rainfall activity in Chhattisgarh was expected to increase from October 25, with rain likely in Rajnandgaon and several other districts on October 28 and 29, 2026. Some areas may receive heavy rainfall of 64–115 mm or very heavy rainfall of 115–204 mm.

The forecast also indicates that rising night temperatures due to rainfall may keep the weather relatively less cold over the next few days.

Farmers Advised to Postpone Harvesting and Protect Crops

Considering the rainfall forecast, KVK Surgi has advised farmers to postpone harvesting paddy, pulse and oilseed crops that are at the maturity stage for the next two to four days.

Farmers who have already started harvesting should immediately shift harvested crops to safe, covered locations to prevent rain-related losses. They have also been advised to make proper arrangements for draining excess rainwater from fields to prevent waterlogging and to monitor their crops regularly.

If signs of pests or diseases appear, farmers should wait for clear weather and then use suitable pesticides or fungicides based on advice from agricultural experts.

Farmers planning to grow tivda or linseed as relay crops have been advised to postpone sowing until weather conditions become favourable. Sowing of Rabi crops should begin in the first week of November, provided that soil moisture and weather conditions are suitable.

Vegetable Growers Urged to Take Precautions

The advisory recommends beginning the sowing of Rabi vegetables such as cauliflower, broccoli and beetroot, as well as late-season cucumber and bitter gourd, from the first week of November, depending on weather and field conditions.

In view of the possibility of strong winds and rainfall, farmers growing bitter gourd, bottle gourd and other creeper vegetables should provide adequate support to the plants.

Banana plants that have flowered or borne fruit should be supported with bamboo or other suitable materials to prevent them from falling during strong winds.

Farmers have also been advised to prevent waterlogging around vegetable crops and fruit-bearing plants by ensuring proper drainage. Regular monitoring for pests and diseases should continue, with control measures undertaken after the weather clears and in consultation with agricultural experts.

Livestock Protection During Strong Winds and Rainfall

KVK Surgi has issued precautionary measures for livestock owners in view of the forecast adverse weather.

  • Keep animals in dry, safe and well-ventilated cattle sheds.
  • Prevent rainwater from entering animal shelters and maintain proper drainage.
  • Do not take animals into open areas for grazing during lightning, and avoid sheltering under trees.
  • Maintain adequate stocks of dry fodder, safe drinking water and essential feed.
  • Take additional precautions to protect livestock from strong winds, waterlogging and other adverse weather conditions.

KVK Chief Appeals to Farmers to Follow Weather Advisories

Dr. Gunjan Jha, Senior Scientist and Head of Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Surgi, Rajnandgaon, has appealed to farmers across the district to take necessary precautions to protect their crops, vegetables, fruit-bearing plants and livestock.

She urged farmers to store harvested crops in safe locations, ensure proper drainage in agricultural fields and follow weather warnings issued by the meteorological department.

Farmers facing agricultural problems can contact the scientists at KVK Surgi for appropriate guidance and technical support.
