In a resounding affirmation of its electoral prowess, the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) has achieved a historic milestone, now controlling approximately 56% of all Members of Legislative Assemblies (MLAs) across India’s state legislatures. With a total of 2,315 MLAs in its fold, the alliance’s grip on subnational power has never been stronger, fueled by its sweeping victory in the recent Bihar Assembly elections. At the helm of this surge is the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which alone boasts 1,654 MLAs – its highest-ever tally nationwide.
This landmark comes on the heels of the NDA’s landslide in Bihar, where the alliance clinched 202 out of 243 seats on November 16, propelling its overall numbers to new heights. The BJP’s share in Bihar jumped to 89 seats, adding crucial momentum after its earlier triumphs in Delhi (48 seats in February 2025) and other states. As BJP IT Cell chief Amit Malviya noted, “BJP is now at its highest-ever strength in State Assemblies and the momentum is only growing.” The party’s legislative footprint has evolved dramatically: from 1,035 MLAs in 2014 to 1,654 today, reflecting a steady climb through strategic wins in Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, and beyond.
India’s state assemblies collectively seat around 4,123 MLAs across 28 states and three Union Territories (Delhi, Jammu & Kashmir, and Puducherry), excluding seven current vacancies. The NDA’s 2,315 representatives – spanning BJP’s core alongside allies like JD(U), Shiv Sena, and JD(S) – underscore its dominance in 20 states and Union Territories as of September 2025. This includes full control in BJP-ruled strongholds like Gujarat (182 MLAs), Madhya Pradesh (230), and Uttar Pradesh (290), where the party forms the government outright.

The opposition, led by the Indian National Congress and regional players like the Trinamool Congress and Samajwadi Party, holds the remaining 44%, but fragmentation has diluted its counterweight. In Bihar alone, the NDA’s win reduced the Mahagathbandhan’s tally to 35 seats, highlighting voter consolidation behind the alliance’s development agenda. Analysts point to key factors: the NDA’s focus on infrastructure, women’s empowerment, and youth employment, as echoed in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s victory speech post-Bihar results.

This NDA stronghold not only bolsters its policy implementation at the grassroots but also positions it favorably for upcoming polls in Tamil Nadu and Kerala in 2026. With 19 chief ministers from the alliance (14 directly BJP), the bloc’s influence on federal dynamics is unparalleled. As one senior NDA leader remarked, “This isn’t just numbers – it’s a mandate for transformative governance.”Critics, however, warn of centralization risks, urging checks on executive overreach. Yet, for now, the alliance’s arithmetic translates to unassailable momentum. As India navigates economic recovery and social reforms, the NDA’s legislative army stands ready to steer the course.
