The face of agriculture in Chhattisgarh is transforming, as progressive farmers adopt modern machinery to improve productivity and efficiency. One such farmer is Shri Chohaldas Sahu from Kesla village in Dongargaon block, Rajnandgaon district, who has significantly benefited from using a paddy transplanter under the state’s Farm Mechanization Submission Scheme.

Sahu received a government subsidy of ₹4.10 lakh on a machine costing ₹9 lakh through the Chhattisgarh State Seed and Agriculture Development Corporation Limited. With this advanced tool, the tedious and time-consuming task of manual paddy transplantation has become much easier and more accurate. The transplanter ensures uniform spacing of seedlings, leading to healthier crop growth and reduced disease incidence.

Owning 10 acres of farmland, Sahu reported that the use of the machine has saved labor and time while simultaneously increasing yield. “Earlier, transplanting was labor-intensive and slow. Now, I can cover up to 4 acres in a single day, and the plant density is much better, promoting healthier crops,” he said.

In addition to boosting his own production — achieving yields of 31 quintals per acre — Sahu also rents the paddy transplanter to neighboring farmers. Charging ₹3,500 per acre, he earns approximately ₹1.2 lakh annually from this service, helping offset his investment while supporting other farmers in mechanizing their operations.

The state government’s ongoing push for agricultural modernization is helping thousands of farmers across Rajnandgaon district. In FY 2024–25 alone, a total subsidy of ₹3.31 crore was provided for the purchase of modern farm machinery including tractors, harvesters, drone sprayers, laser land levelers, seed drills, and more. These efforts aim to reduce the burden on farmers while enhancing productivity and income.

Such farmer-centric policies and schemes, including procurement at ₹3,100 per quintal under the Krishak Unnati Yojana, are making modern equipment more accessible and encouraging farmers to adopt technological solutions.
