In a major initiative aimed at protecting the declining groundwater table and promoting sustainable agriculture, the Gram Panchayat of Khursipar under Chhuria development block convened a special Gram Sabha and resolved not to grow paddy during the Rabi season.
The meeting focused on the importance of crop diversification and adopting crops that require minimal water. Farmers discussed cultivating gram, lentils (tiwara), moong, wheat, maize, and other summer crops that help conserve water while ensuring stable yields.
Officials highlighted the growing concern over groundwater depletion across the district. As part of the district-wide awareness campaign, Gram Sabhas are being organized to educate farmers on sustainable farming methods and water management.

During the session, villagers were informed about the negative impact of continuous paddy cultivation, including declining soil fertility, changing weather patterns, and rising input costs. Experts explained that running water pumps for long durations leads to persistent low-voltage issues in households and causes borewells to dry up, triggering drinking water crises.
The special Gram Sabha saw the participation of the Sarpanch, Panch members, the Rural Agriculture Extension Officer, Technical Assistant, Employment Assistant, local farmers, and villagers. The collective decision marks a significant step towards adopting environmentally responsible agricultural practices in the region.
