For years, residents of Rupakathi village in Dongargaon development block struggled with limited access to safe drinking water, relying on handpumps, wells and seasonal sources. During summer months, the situation often worsened, forcing villagers—especially women and children—to travel long distances to fetch water, resulting in loss of time, physical strain and adverse health impacts.

Recognising these challenges, Rupakathi was brought under the Government of India’s ambitious Jal Jeevan Mission, aimed at providing every rural household with adequate and safe drinking water through tap connections at home.

Under the mission, a comprehensive and planned water supply system was developed in the village. Safe water sources were identified as per technical standards, followed by construction of water infrastructure and a distribution network to ensure both quality and continuity of supply. Through expansion of the pipeline network, all 107 families in the village were provided Functional Household Tap Connections (FHTCs).

The project was implemented through coordinated efforts of the Public Health Engineering Department and active participation of villagers, ensuring timely completion while maintaining quality benchmarks. To sustain the system in the long term, residents were also sensitised on responsible water use, conservation and maintenance practices.

With regular tap water now available in every home, Rupakathi has seen a marked improvement in overall living conditions. Women and children have been relieved from the daily burden of collecting water, allowing more time for education, household responsibilities and livelihood activities. Access to clean water has also led to a decline in water-borne diseases and greater awareness about health and hygiene.

Beyond providing drinking water, the Jal Jeevan Mission has laid the foundation for broader social and economic transformation. Savings in time and effort have increased productivity, contributing to a noticeable enhancement in quality of life across the village.

Village Sarpanch Pushpalata Sahu said that before implementation of the scheme, water scarcity was a constant concern, particularly during summers when women had to walk long distances to fetch water, affecting both their health and daily routines.

“After tap water reached every household, the situation in our village has completely changed. Each family now receives clean and safe water at home, bringing immense relief to residents. The mission has not only solved our water problem but has also increased awareness about cleanliness and water conservation,” she said.

She added that women are now free from worries over drinking water and can focus more on their families, children’s education and other productive activities. Health-related issues have also declined significantly.

Villagers echoed similar sentiments, describing the facility as a lasting achievement for Rupakathi. With regular water supply through taps, daily life has become more organised and secure. Supported by community participation and guidance from the Gram Panchayat, the village continues to maintain the system effectively, ensuring sustainable operation in the years ahead.
