In a significant push for renewable energy, Chhattisgarh Assembly Speaker Dr. Raman Singh called solar power a “golden opportunity for citizens and farmers to become electricity producers while protecting the environment.” He was addressing a workshop on the Pradhan Mantri Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana and the Pradhan Mantri Kusum Yojana, organized at Gandhi Sabhagrah in Rajnandgaon by the Chhattisgarh State Power Distribution Company Limited (CSPDCL) under the ‘Seva Parv’ initiative.

On the occasion, Dr. Singh flagged off the ‘Surya Rath’ to promote awareness of solar schemes and distributed certificates and symbolic mementos to beneficiaries. He emphasized that India’s solar power capacity, currently around 100 GW, is targeted to triple to 300 GW by 2030 to meet rising energy demands. Highlighting the harmful environmental impact of coal and fossil fuel-based power generation, he urged citizens to utilize rooftops and unused land for installing solar plants, enabling them to meet their energy needs and sell surplus power to the grid.

He noted that under the Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, households receive up to ₹78,000 subsidy from the Centre and ₹30,000 from the state government. Similarly, the Kusum Yojana allows farmers to install solar pumps with just 10% contribution, significantly reducing irrigation costs and dependence on diesel. “In developed countries, more than 50% of energy comes from solar. By adopting solar energy, we can balance the environment and prevent deforestation,” Dr. Singh said.

Mayor Madhusudan Yadav praised the vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, noting that the schemes empower both households and farmers to become self-reliant. District Panchayat Chairperson Kiran Vaishnav urged citizens to take advantage of subsidies covering more than half of the installation cost, highlighting the growing trend of households across India becoming both producers and consumers of power.
The event witnessed participation from local public representatives, officials of the electricity department, and a large number of citizens, underlining Rajnandgaon’s commitment to becoming Chhattisgarh’s “Green District.”
