Location: Rajnandgaon, India

Panic gripped the area outside Basantpur Police Station on Wednesday evening after a massive fire broke out in a 200 KVA electricity transformer located directly opposite the police station. The incident occurred at around 6:30 pm, with flames rising rapidly and creating alarm among people in the surrounding locality.

Police personnel at the station immediately noticed the fire and informed the electricity department by phone. They also took prompt steps to help prevent a possible accident, including initiating action to disconnect the power supply and ensure that no further electrical hazard occurred.

Local Residents Join Efforts to Control Fire

Local residents also responded quickly as police personnel and electricity department staff reached the spot. A fire extinguisher available at the nursing home of Dr. Narendra Gandhi, located opposite Basantpur Police Station, was immediately brought into use.

Employees of the nursing home, police staff and neighbourhood residents worked together to control the flames during the initial five to ten minutes. Their timely intervention helped prevent the fire from spreading and becoming more severe.

Department personnel also initiated the necessary technical work at the site and began efforts to restore the electricity supply.

Collective Response Prevents Major Accident

The road near the transformer witnesses considerable movement of people travelling to and from rural areas, including pedestrians and cyclists. The fire could therefore have resulted in a serious accident.

However, the prompt response of Basantpur police personnel, the electricity department and employees of Dr. Narendra Gandhi’s nursing home, along with local residents, helped bring the situation under control in time.

No casualties were reported in the incident. The quick use of available firefighting equipment and coordination between citizens, police and the electricity department emerged as an example of public awareness and collective responsibility during an emergency.

Electricity Supply Expected to Be Restored Within Two Hours

At the site, G. Rohit Mandavi said the fire had been brought under control. He stated that the transformer cable had been burnt and that the flames had intensified due to the burning oil.

Mandavi, who reached the spot along with the department team, said efforts were underway to restore the electricity distribution system in the affected area within one to two hours.
