Day Turns into Night in Rajnandgaon as ‘Maitha’ Weather System Darkens Skies

Streetlights Lit Up in Broad Daylight; Dense Clouds and Moisture Create Unusual Midday Gloom

An unusual weather phenomenon stunned the residents of Rajnandgaon on Tuesday, as daylight faded much earlier than usual, making the city appear as if night had arrived before noon. The sky remained densely clouded since morning, and by around 2 PM, streets, markets and residential areas were engulfed in semi-darkness. Streetlights switched on automatically, shops turned on their interior lighting, and the entire city found itself wrapped in a surreal twilight.

Locals recalled a popular film lyric to describe the atmosphere: “Din mein raat ho gayi” — truly capturing the mood as sunlight failed to penetrate the thick cloud cover all day.

Meteorological officials attributed this unusual change to a low-pressure system named ‘Maitha’ that has formed over the sea, affecting weather patterns across central India. According to the weather department, Maitha has significantly increased moisture levels in the atmosphere, causing deep cloud formations that blocked sunlight throughout the day.

The impact of this system is being observed not only in Chhattisgarh but also in Madhya Pradesh and surrounding regions, where light rainfall and cool winds have been reported. Weather experts further indicated that the influence of Maitha may persist for the next 48 hours, with possibilities of thunderstorms and scattered rain in several districts.

For the people of Rajnandgaon, the day offered a rare and memorable experience — streets glowing under artificial light, a muted silence in the air, and the sky wrapped in layers of dark clouds. A day that looked and felt like night.
