Political tensions have intensified in Rajnandgaon following the burning of an effigy of senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Khubchand Parakh. BJP leader Manoj Nirvani has strongly criticised the incident, describing the Congress action as unfortunate and saying that political opposition must also observe certain limits in a democracy.
Nirvani said political disagreements were natural, but protests should remain within the boundaries of democratic conduct.
BJP Leader Refers to Recent ‘Save Democracy’ Rally
Recalling the BJP’s recent ‘Save Democracy, Remove Anarchy’ rally in Rajnandgaon, Nirvani said the programme had received widespread support and had been successful.
He said that during the rally, some words in the slogans raised by senior BJP leader Khubchand Parakh may have been inadvertently interchanged. Describing it as a possible human error, Nirvani said political disagreement over the incident was understandable, but burning the effigy of a senior leader was not appropriate.
Nirvani Questions Congress’s Protest Approach
Nirvani said the Congress’s manner of protest raised questions about its political approach. Referring to earlier statements made by Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi, Mallikarjun Kharge and Sonia Gandhi, he said there had also been several instances of controversial remarks by Congress leaders.

He argued that responding so aggressively to an alleged verbal slip during a political rally reflected what he described as double standards.
Appeal for Decorum in Political Opposition
The BJP leader said political parties had every right to criticise one another and express disagreement. However, actions such as personal insults and effigy burning unnecessarily create bitterness in the political atmosphere.
He appealed to the Congress to reconsider its methods of protest and strongly condemned the effigy-burning incident.
Nirvani added that people understand the conduct and double standards of political parties. He said healthy political competition and dignified dialogue were essential to strengthening democratic traditions.
